We are getting ready for an IT exam. they are asking for a Remote Capture Deposit policy. We don't offer remote capture deposit so i don't think we need a policy. There are three of us working on this. We do merchant capturing, where at the end of the day we scan all work do our data processing center. one person seems to think that is remote capture deposit but i don't think it is. can some one give me a definition of remote capture deposit and is a policy necessary and should i do a policy on merchant capturing?

It may boil down to semantics - we are a one bank shop and do remote capture, which we call branch capture, with our in-house work that we upload to our processor. We have a policy for this. We also offer merchant capture to selected customers for them to upload their deposits to us. We also have a contract between them and us, and a policy for that. You may want to clarify exactly what they are wanting before you offer up too much...but these days, you probably are going to need a policy for that (whatever 'that' is.)

In-house branch capture should be addressed in your IT policies and procedures. That is not the same as RDC.

ok i have just been corrected by the head cashier. we electronically submit our proof work to our data processing center. so this has nothing to do with remote capture deposit correct? and will i need a policy for that?

Randy...perhaps you can help me with a point of clarification...we are getting started with "Merchant Capture", where the customer will scan their checks at their site and transmit them to us...although some folks are calling it "Merchant Capture", this fits the definition of Remote Data Capture, correct? And we should have a risk analysis, agreements, policies & procedures and monitoring, no?

Absolutely, this is RDC all the way around. The offical term is Remote Deposit Capture.

And don't forget that the FFIEC's exam pamphlet on RDC expands the term "remote deposit capture" to include in-house image capture behind the teller line or elsewhere in the organization. They want banks to have a policy that calls for risk analysis and management, among other things.
