Super ATMs

Japan's Mitsubishi Bank Ltd. bought 250 ATMs from NCR Corp. to be installed in Japan. These ATMs, nicknamed by NCR "super ATMs" will not only handle the traditional ATM functions of giving account balances, accepting deposits and dispensing cash. They will also accept deposits of cash, coins and checks, and can issue as well as update savings passbooks.

Cash deposited into the machine is automatically transferred to the cash-dispensing mechanism for issuance to other customers.

In order to reduce maintenance costs and lower security risk, most of the ATMs in Japan operate from 9 o'clock in the morning until 7 o'clock in the evening. However, customers are pressuring the financial institutions to expand the hours of operation. They would like to have 24 hour service.
