A study done by Rice University for Pulse showed that 18% of ATM cardholders pay 60% of all surcharges collected; 70% of ATM users said they had never paid such fees; and 80% said they deliberately avoid ATMs that surcharge.

Lenders who have portfolios of 50,000 to 150,000 loans reported total revenue per loan of $405. Portfolios of 350,000 to 750,000 loans made $491 per loan. Loan servicers, industrywide, report that in 1998 employees serviced an average of 938 loans each.

An economist at the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank said that from May, 1998 through June, 1999, the official savings rate for Americans was negative (as in less than zero). The chief economist at Merrill Lynch & Co., looking at the same period of time, said the savings rate for Americans was 12%. The latest report from the Federal Reserve Board indicates Americans are now saving 4.7% of their disposable income, compared to 3.8% a year ago. Take your pick.
