Tech Alert Briefing for 6/5/2003

BugBear Bites hard across the Net

A new, dangerous e-mail virus is on the rise, spreading rapidly within the past few hours. It comes into users' mailboxes with subject lines closely resembling spam email messagesbut cleverly drops a keylogger program that allows hackers to eavesdrop on sensitive information such as credit card numbers and passwords entered into web sites.

The virus employs email address spoofing techniques to socially-engineer users into thinking that the email may be from an trusted party. This means the worm can "steal" your email address and impersonate you.The subject lines and message texts also vary widely and in some cases are stolen from documents and files found on the victim's PC. For example,in the past few hours BankersOnline received several emails purporting to come from the OCC with a subject line, "Please see the attached file".

Once the email is inadvertently opened by an unsuspecting user, it is capable of spreading rapidly throughout a corporate network. Network administrators are urged to update their virus signature files and to ensure that all users are protected.Recent guidance by the FDIC on FIL-43-2003 - "Guidanceon Developing an Information System Patch Management Program to AddressSoftware Vulnerabilities" should be reviewed.
