Handbrake might work and it's freeware (but I didn't have much luck with it).
If you're trying to save movies to watch on your iPod, this is what I do:
Download DVDFab (http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm). You can get the free stripped down version. It'll remove all the annoying encrypted and copyright stuff off your DVD. Save the DVD to a folder on your hard drive.
Then I use iVideo to copy the file from the hard drive to a folder on my PC or the desktop. When that's finished (it can take 60 minutes) I import it to my iTunes library. I gave up on Handbrake because it wasn't faster than iVideo. Guess it's just a slow process...
If I hadn't already bought iVideo, I'd just buy full DVDFab version that is able to convert DVDs to MPEG4 for iPod.
