I'm sure she didn't expect 8 when she got the invetro.

You'd have to ask a Dr, but isnt the reason for putting so many in is because the success rate is super low?

But even if she only wanted one more and got 8, the question is why did she do it when there apparently is no father and she already had 6.

Quadruplets x 2 = 8 + 6 already = 14 total. WOW, I can add and that is a lot of kids for one couple.

I too think the fertility specialists should be investigated..........also, I noticed they declared bankruptcy 18 months ago and live with the mama's parents, but I am sure generous people will donate and help them out. Of course, there will still be a lot of "I can't believe this" comments, including me!

Not a lot of logic put into it, I guess...

Did I read correctly that the granddad was in the Iraqi military and is returning there so he can make more money?

He also was quoted in another article saying the family has a huge house somewhere that the media will never find. I wonder if everyone will follow him back to Iraq?

The authority quoted in the article (and this was repeated by Dr Tim on GMA too) states that sop is to implant no more than two embrios.

I too want to know who paid for the procedure. If this was done on the taxpayers dole, I'm po'd!

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
We don't know where the in vitro procedure was handled. It may not have been in the US. We aren't the only ones with the technology. It is irresponsible for someone to go to such lengths to bring new life into this world when they are unable to provide for the little ones they currently have - bankruptcy and foreclosure do not bode well for their future and the mom's ability to manage money. Its all a bit strange.

However, we all make choices that other folks think are stupid or irresponsible. Fortunately for us, our choices aren't broadcast on TV for the entire world to judge. Suffice it to say that her choice wouldn't have been my choice. May God help her and those children live with the decision she made.

Where the heart is
I'm going to be really snarky about Kaiser since they are the folks handling this case. Maybe they figured that since they elimiated 5 kids from the world, Kaiser had fired parents of murder suicide family
there is only a net gain of 3.

I am having a very difficult time sorting this out. All kinds of money was/is being spent to bring these 8 babies into the world and while another family with 5 kids was tossed aside like a used lottery ticket.

I think I read that she was already prego when she went to Kaiser. They tried to get her to reduce but she refused.

Come on, Bonnie. Loupe had two houses and was bilking the system for childcare benefits. The authorities said he had a 'victim' mentality. Undoubtedly he was under tons of pressure because he couldn't pay his bills. Lots of people are now. But I think pulling Kayser into it in the manner you have is just...well, snarky. They were just abiding by the same rules and regulations for falsification of documentation that we all live by as compliance folks.

I've herad that when mulitple embyos are implanted, if too many take, the doctor will go in and basically "selectively abort" the unwanted fetuses.

I don't agree with that, btu I heard it's done.

If I was having to go through somethign liek this, I think I'd want three to be implanted to improve the success rate. If it happened all three survived...well, 3 is more manageable than 8!!!

I heard she went to a fertility clinic and was inseminated with frozen sperm. That makes dad a Popsicle.

snip: The single mother of octuplets born in California last week is seeking $2 million from media interviews and commercial endorsements to help pay the costs of raising the children.

Nadya Suleman, 33, plans a career as a television childcare expert after it emerged last week that she already had six children before giving birth on Monday. She now has 14 children younger than 8.

Grandma: Octuplets mom obsessed with kids

updated 4:49 p.m. CT, Sat., Jan. 31, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.

Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.

"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

There is more to the article as well.
I just think it is crazy to have that many children.

A career??? She has 14 children under the age of 8. Who is going to raise the kids while she is having a career?? Who would look to this woman for advice?

Seriously, she would think for a moment that she's a CHILDCARE EXPERT???!!! um...who took care of the first six while she was bedridden and pregnant with the next eight? This is such a farce. And I tell ya', if PEOPLE puts this on their cover and pays her big bucks, thereby helping her realize her dream, I'll never read that rag again.

Mostly, I'm sorry for those eight little babies (and their siblings)who are now part of a media circus. Did you see the them leaving their house with blankets over their heads on the news today?

ok...rant over...thankfully I've got piles of work to keep my mind off this nut case.

Where did you read that he had two houses? What I read is that he had two MORTGAGES on the same house and was way over his head in debt. As for the child care "benefits", what I read is that he and his wife were trying to qualify for subsidized child care. In Southern California, child care typically costs between $7,000 to $10,000 per year PER CHILD. Child care is either subsidized for low/mod income, or you pay full freight. With 5 kids, the family was looking at between $35,000 to $50,000 in child care.

I don't know their exact income, but typically, the technician position they had pays about $50,000 to $60,000 per year which means that one spouse would bascially have to turn over his or her entire paycheck to pay for child care. It looks like with the debt they had, they wouldn't be able to go with only one paycheck, or so the couple thought. I know a lot of families where both spouses work because if one stays home, and then the other spouse is laid off, then they are really in troupble.

What these people needed was some real debt and emotional counseling to figure out how to work out their situation. It appears instead they got the heave ho, and those beautiful children paid the ultimate price.
