but isn't talking about all the good works you (not specifically you j-man - you just happen to be the last poster. this is a generic "you") do, or the money you give, contrary to religious teaching? obviously, i don't know the tenets of every church, but it would seem to me that talking about it is a way to get recognition for it, which makes it not a "church-like"* act.
*i didn't want to specify "christian" or any specific religion here. i'm not pointing fingers at any church. I have the same thoughts, kitten. I thought the idea of being "a good Christian" was to just do it... ::shrugs::

I agree with Kitten. I forget the exact Bible verse, but it states that for Believers to do their good deeds, giving, fasting, etc. with joy and in secret if possible, for the rewards you will get if done in secret will be in Heaven. If you receive your rewards here and now, that takes away those rewards in Heaven. Something like that.

Isn't that why the Protestants (Martin Luther) broke away from the Catholic church.
Instead of paying indulgences and giving they thought one is saved by faith alone.

Again, I forget the verses exactly, but Faith without works is dead, and vice versa. There has to be both Faith and good works.

Well from what I remember that was not Luther's idea.
Salvation comes through faith alone.
Again - this is going back to sunday school and intro to religion days.

Luther taught that salvation is a free gift of God and received only through true faith in Jesus as redeemer from sin, not from good works. His theology challenged the authority of the pope of the Roman Catholic Church by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge[7] and opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians as priests before God (priesthood of all believers).[8]

I think you are referring to the passage in James 2:
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

I think that your post is roughly in line with the teachings of Christ, encouraging us to give in secret, because if we give for public recognition, we've received our reward. That said, I don't think the people who posted here did so to win praise, I think they did so to answer questions.
