Beth- did you pick these up yet?

I picked up "Sherlock Holmes; the Complete Novels and Stories, Volume I" in paperback last week. I haven't read these since high school and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy them!

I'm on the last Dresden Files book that the library has...book 10/Small Favor and then I'll have to find 11. Sherlock Holmes might be a good place to go next, I've been seeing the movie previews and really want to go see the new movie next week.

I've just started The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's odd so far.

just finished The Sanctuary by Raymond Khoury, just started the Charlemagne (something) by Steven Berry

I'm stuck on #8 in the Dresden Files series (Proven Guilty). I just have not had any time to read lately. I have my comfy chair reserved strictly for reading the weekend after Christmas (assuming family leaves by then)!

Reading Hide and Seek (Sisterhood Series #8) now.

Dresden is on my list after Sisterhood.

Sisterhood books are good. Who is Dresden and are those good books? Thanks

The Dresden Files is a series of fantasy/mystery novels written by Jim Butcher. He provides a first person narrative of each story from the point of view of the main character, private investigator and wizard Harry Dresden, as he recounts investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. Butcher's original proposed title for the first novel was "Semiautomagic", which sums up the series' balance of fantasy and hard-boiled detective fiction.

Jim Butcher is the author. I usually describe the Dresden books as "Harry Potter for adults." The main character, Harry Dresden, is kind of what you'd get if a very sarcastic HP grew up, moved to Chicago, and became a PI. The story really takes off after about #4, but if you don't read those first few you'll be lost on most of the character background and plot foundation.

Butcher does an excellent job of character development throughout the series. I've liked each book a little more as I've gone through the series.

I love his characters. They're very "alive" and as much fun - in their own way - as the Stephanie Plum cast. Butters and Bob are my favorites, with Mouse and Thomas a close second.

Mouse is becoming my favorite. I do like Thomas, Bob and Mister. Toot-Toot cracks me up as well.

The tiny flying fey character MVP award is held by Jenks. Sorry. Toot is fun, but only a pretender to the throne.

Just finished The Associate by John Grisham. Typical Grisham, but a good story nonetheless.

Just received Catherine Coulter's Knock Out today, she never dissapoints and Julie Garwood's new book comes out next week. I hate that she only puts out 1 new one a year!!

Well, this man does. Good fiction is truer than most of the non-fiction currently out there.

I've been reading the Bhagavad Gita, Dhammapada, and Upanishads

Just bought Those Lovely bones for my daughter for Christmas. Has anyone read that? She's 13 and I wonder if the content is a little too much for her. She wants to be an author so I have to get her off of all of the vampire books and into something more well written.

I'd take the time to read it myself but that's just the thing....I don't have the kind of time right now to get it finished by Christmas.

Any thoughts??

I don't really think it's appropriate unless you know that your 13YO is mature.

I've read some pretty graphic stuff and that section was up there. It could have been worse, to be sure, but it'd be a heavy subject for a teenager.

This doesn't take away from the book though. It really is wonderful. If she wants to be an author there is a lot in that novel she can learn about character development
