Why not do more sets of fewer reps? Why push the limit of your discomfort?

Pup, instead constantly subjecting your skin to the icy/hot. Try the thermacare pads made for the shoulder at night.
Yes it is heat as opposed to cold (Ice is still the thing imediately affter you have inflamed it), but ibuprofen or naproxen combined with the thermacare pad will make it feel better.
The Methol and camphor in the icy/hot eventually gets a little tough on your hide.

HG has a pretty good point here. If you are doing multiple sets because you are still building your strength, great! But if you are doing it because your shoulder won't allow it. You might need to give it a rest for a week. Especially if it is making strange or unusual noises (in most folks, that would be any noises)!

LOL....strange and unusual noises happen in all joints at all levels of activity (sitting, standing, walking down the hall, etc).

HG, the best answer I can provide is simply that I'm stubborn. I'll look into it, though.

Ok, the last five days I've had to divide my pushups into multiple sets. Tonight, I'm going to do 3 sets of 8 each. I'm still plugging away, but it's getting hard! smile I'm loving the sense of accomplishment from our project, though. Thanks for continuing to post and motivate me. You all rock.

Not as much pain in the shoulder today after my 2 sets of 12 last night. When I got to 8, I felt good, so I kept on to 12. I was going to split it up into 3 sets last night, and I may do that soon anyway.

I tried putting my hands closer, and it just didn't seem to work for me at all. I think it's because I'm just THAT weak. Anyway, I'll struggle through, however I have to do it.

Perhaps sets of 10, 8 and 7 this evening...

Pup, don't further hurt yourself!

Do them against the wall or a counter for a while if you have to. This isn't a do it or die trying type of thing!

She has a point. You need to let the shoulder heal. Alter things for a bit maybe, and let it feel better?

I've been doing 15, getting ready to bump it to 20 next week...

I'm so glad the weather is so much better this week, (30s and clear!) so I've been able to get out and run a bit yesterday, and I plan on it again tomorrow.

BTW, have you read any of the Thursday Next novels by Jasper Fforde? Chesh is the librarian of the Great Library of the Book World. smile

I don't think I can make it to the day that equals my age, this is getting too difficult.

All the best to you young folks, I won the beer bet so I just need to collect on that.

No reason you can't alter it to adding five per week or something like that too, instead of one per day. Doing what you can and trying to do more each week is still going to be a good thing for you. Don't give up on it, otherwise B^3 will send his dad over to arm wrestle you!

Although I'll also toss out that dad is only 5'6" and weighs a pretty lean 156 lbs. Mom is only 4'10", but she's the scary one! eek

My mom is doing these with us. She is 77 and has 2 poorly healed broken femurs, a mis-aligned sort of healed broken (upper arm bone) and cancer. (Yeah, she's kind of a mess. But she's still my hero and she's still doing the pushups)

^^^^ exactly why I am GOING to find a way to keep going.

Honestly, I think that if I can just make it through February, the extra time I have that I can begin to dedicate to cardio and other exercises (considering Kempo Karate twice a week), my overall fitness level and potential weight loss will make the pushups much easier and probably become just another exercise rather than my only focus.

So there! smile

Reading the fixed version first makes it so much more amusing!

I can very much attest to the fact that dropping a few dozen pounds will make your push-ups immensely easier! I've done sets with a 45lb weight on my back, which puts me close to my starting weight, and I can't even imagine trying to do a hundred that way, definitely not 366.

I would just like to say that I am still keeping up with the push ups. Yay. I have also kept up with the gym with 4 days a week. I have been going in at 5:15am and I never thought that I would sustain that. Never was a morning kind of person. Now I kind of like it and what is really cool is that I have outlasted all my friends that started with me. Probably because they don't have BankersOnline and the 2012 Pushup Challenge thread!
