I would recommend AGAINST inserts of any kind based solely on the recommendation of a running store (or chiro for that matter). If it's problematic, go to a sports med doctor/therapist. The numb foot is a symptom, treating the symptom wont solve the root cause. You need a good sports med doctor/therapist to get to the root cause of the numbness.
Think 'check engine light' in your car...you dont just unplug the fuse to make the light go away or cover the light with duct tape. You have to find the cause to really fix it. Good point Jen. I'll shop around and see if I can at least find a good looking one! I know of a few places with good reputations that I can probably trust to give sound medical advice without a sales motive. It's only taken...oh...3 years for my PT to beat that thought process into my thick skull. But she's right, every ache/pain I've had has not been the problem, only a symptom.

Having super long legs is great for running. Unless one is even super longer than the other. Matt if you can find a Chiro that is a sports med specialist, it really makes a big difference. Most of them are used to working on sedentary individuals that threw their back out picking up their cockapoo. The sports med people are more likely to be imediately familiar with your issue and the cause.

Probably necessary. The guy I go to is a personal friend, but he's definitely more of the goofy holistic type and based on his waiting room, lots of cockapoo related injuries! Sometimes even the dogs are there to be adjusted . I have the card of a guy that was on our Tough Mudder team, he seems like a logical choice, but not sure what he specializes in. Another thing to research!

I second going to a Chiro that knows sports related injuries. My chiro and I are in the same spin class and then hit the weights afterwards for cross training.
My PT is not sports med and I think I've reached her limit of expertise. If I have to go that route again at any point, I really will need to think about switching it up.

Rub some dirt on it and keep running.
seriously, go to the running store and get an analysis done, it will be the best thing you've ever done to improve your enjoyment of running.

I've had analysis done before, but the new place incorporates cameras/software and is a lot more high-tech than the place I've had it done before (they mostly just watched you walk, jog and run on a treadmill and looked over your patterns and how your foot strikes etc, then made the call based entirely on those observations). I'm mostly just curious to see how it's done and what they say, but it seems like it would be more accuraate.

Be sure to mention the situation with your left foot. Most of those guys have seen just about everything and will be able to help you out.

Look into some of the PT/Sports Med places near you. One of our local health care systems does a full running eval for $75 as well as free injury evals. The running eval consisted of recording the gait and having 2 PTs look at it and provide feedback, looking at shoes, feet, muscle strength and flexibility and then offering suggestions and exercises and what not.

Nice! I have a few places I can look into to see what's available, it'll have to wait a few weeks though until life settles down and I get back home etc.
Did my run this morning, realized it was 92 when I finished it. No wonder I was sweating so much! I'm getting pretty tired of the heat. On the bright side, it's 49 at Yellowstone right now...looking forward to some of that nice weather next week!

If you can still raise two thumbs to point at yourself, you didn't do enough push-ups Matt!

If your thumbs are sore from doing push-ups, you're doing some crazy style I've never seen!

I can barely pull off one-handed with all fingers present, so I think my thumbs are safe for now!

I did 100 so far today (in sets of 25) and will do 75 more tonight in two sets. Maybe by the end of August I can get up to 200 by adding 1 every few days. Still trying but not quite able to keep up. The whole time I'm doing them, I picture that guy doing thousands of pushups every day!

Was chatting with my boss a bit this morning and she was going into detail about her trip to Hawaii coming up in October. It's not your typical vacation though, it's for the Ironman World Championships, that you have to qualify for etc. It's her second time attending. She listed off the specifics and I think my jaw hit the floor. Starts with a 2.4 mile ocean swim, then a 112 mile bike, followed by a full 26.2 marathon. Holy farkin' carp! She's 51 by the way. I'd think the Ironman world champions should be in the running for world's greatest athletes
