I've begun to run one direction for half the distance, then turning around and running back on the same path (whether street or sidewalk), rather than do 'loops' around a designated route. Of course, I am only running outside one day a week, but after that debauchery of racing my husband and doing something to my ACL... I learned my lesson.

Much of my opinion (started to type wisdom and then thought better of it) is based on info from the PT, she says the braces/supports/taping allow the weakness to continue and you dont correct the biomechanical issue. The sore spot is your engine warning light...it's a sign/symptom very rarely is it the root cause.

Warming up...I like the way the cross country coach does it with the kids. I ran with them all summer. Dynamic warm ups, high knee marches slowly followed by slow butt kickers. Then high knees running and butt kickers running. Soldier march, walking lunges, leg swings, etc. Maybe 10-15 minutes. No stretching before running. Stretching is after, part of your cool down.

Pain when running/working out. I use the PT's 1-10 scale. 1 is "huh". 2 is "what on earth, I feel something off". 3 is "that's really uncomfortable". 4 is "ouch" and you STOP doing whatever you're doing at that point. (I've finally learned that lesson after finishing a 15 mile run with a stress fracture...very stupid.) If you're at a 3 resting, RICE and some cross training (bike, elliptical, pool, etc) are probably a good idea for a few days. I will admit, I dont do that very well.

What Jen is talking about (and a lot of you know this) is that roads usually have a "crown". They are high in the center and low on the shoulder to facilitate run off and prevent pooling.
But for a runner, that means constantly running with one foot lower than the other. Doing it the same way everytime eventually leads to imbalance and over use injuries. So be aware when you run which foot is lower and next time swith so the other foot is.

After two nights of ricing and spending my time on the eliptical yesterday, I'm feeling better today at least. Not a running day today, so I have another recovery day. I guess I'll need to see how it feels tomorrow to decide where I go from there. Won't be doing my scheduled run probably, but we'll see. Then I have an off day Friday and will be improvising for the weekend, so by next week I should be back to normal.

I'm just messing with Jen, don't be alarmed smile. She meant ice, there's no magical property about rice except it being delicious. If anything, wild rice would be the way to go I'm sure!

Over the weekend (spent at a cottage on the lake in Door County... pure heaven!) a friend's daughter was wearing a really cute T-shirt with a picture of a cartoon Tyrannosaurus Rex lying down with his giant head and his "toes" touching the ground (giant vegetation and boulders scattered around behind him) and his tiny little forearms high up off the ground with the caption "Man, I hate pushups...." 2013 BOL Pushup Challenge Official T-Shirt anyone? laugh laugh laugh

Finally got in a run today....for the first time in WEEKS and WEEKS!! I'm a bit sore but at least I was at the beach and the sun was out and the temp was perfect!! smile

Things are settling down for me (sort of) and it's time to get the exercise back on track!

I was a little worried that my work pants would no longer fit but they do, just a little snug. smile
