Matt, take a cue from the 45 year old Mudder. Mix up your workouts and add off the cuff, out of the box, practical strength exercises. You will get strong and still stay lean. Keep one or two days of weights in there and go hard on those days. I dont think you will be totally disappointed with the results. My workout last night included, weighted twists, pullups, dips, chin ups(over hand), military presses, lat pulls, sit ups, crunches, curls, triceps extensions and windshield wipers. Never got bored and got very tired. Also get a tire and sledge hammer! Its good exercise and screws with the neighbors heads! My neighbors would laugh if I had that out on my deck...mostly because after a swing or two, the whole thing would fall off of the building and I'd drop from the 2nd floor. I'd just bring it to work if I were to do that. This morning was pull-ups, dumbbell bench, tricep extensions, push-ups, isolated bicep curls and dips. I printed out the tough mudder boot camp list and will probably start on that in December. It sucks trying to balance total body workouts with running I think. I can feel the impact on my runs. But I have nothing to train for until the end of March, so maybe it's just my lack of a short-term goal to aim for that's messing me up.

If your goal is to get bigger and increase strength appreciably, running much wont be your friend. Your diet would have to be directed for this as well. If you are shooting for overall fitness, its doable. Hard, but dosable.

I need more of a goal than that though. I don't care about looking huge or being able to rip a phone book in half with my pecs. Now that I'm married, not like I'll be strolling the beach in my board shorts looking for ladies to show off for It's just that not having an event to train for means I lose motivation. I can go curl stuff and do pull ups, but why am I doing it? Nothing in my life requires brute force (though there are some people around here I'd like to use that force on!) and with running, I enjoy it enough that I can do it without races, but having races on the calendar certainly helps me get out of bed. I don't need 6 months to prep for the mudder, so it's too long range to get me going on the weights. My workout schedule is always cyclical, every two months or so I get bored to death and start wondering what the point is and why I'm giving up my sleep

I watched several video clips from the race throughout the weekend, very crazy stuff! The same guy that won last year won this year as well, crazy beast. 10 miles, 32 obstacles per lap. Top male and female both completed nine laps in just over 24 hours, stopping for no more than 5 minutes at a time. Amelia Boone and Junyong Pak. Look up Amelia BBB, you might have to try giving her a call!

Marathoner, Death races in summer and winter, multiple TM's, an attorney...she's terrifying! Race Ipsa Loquitur (The race speaks for itself, I think) http://raceipsa.blogspot.com/Mani, she lives in Chicago...you should probably try to train with her!

Awesome!! Good for him, hope it's not too chilly.
I agreed to go on a run with my (21 year old, marathon running, National Guard member) brother-in-law on Thursday morning so we can justify our massive calorie consumption later on in the day. I agreed to 7 miles, but conditioned that we had to be out by or before 7:30. Silly college kid, he's never up that early! I'm hoping that will allow me to somewhat keep up with him...

I'd have to catch her pretty quick, I wear out after the first 5 hours or so.... Seriously, pretty inspiring. Not so much in the "gee, she overcame so much" sort of way. More the "She never gives up" sort of way! ::Hits the floor and knocks of 50 of todays 324:: 74 left.

Haha! I need him slow, he'll blow me away if I try to do his pace for 7 miles, so he's going to have to come down to my 8:45-9:00ish.

Jen, you'll be amazed how many people can fit in a house. We typically have 60-70 at family gatherings in my cousin's house. It's tight, but it's fun!! Granted, some of those are smallish children.
