Matt, you're an Iowan and NOT an ex-wrestler? I wasn't aware such a thing existed!! The difference I'll have to what you were able to do (already getting my excuses ready) is that I have degenerative disc disease affecting my 3 upper Lumbar discs. Biking is bearable, but running will be difficult. I'll be counting heavily on advice from TJ, Jen, Happy and BB1 when it comes to how to take care of my knees, shins, etc. There truly is a lot of inspiration here, if one is willing to be inspired. Thanks for the input, Matt. I'll add you to the list of "inspirers". Being from Iowa, I may even "swing by" and buy you a beer for your help.

So, I think my New Year's Resolution this year (I've never really done one) will have to do with my overall fitness. I'm 5'10" and about 215-220. In high school, I was 5'10" and about 120 (wrestled 103 half my senior year). From a weight perspective, I truly think that 175-180 is where I'd prefer to be. From a fitness perspective, I can no longer run...at all. Coming from a running background (High School Cross Country and Track, sub 5 minute mile, 17 minute 5k, 39:30 10k), I'm embarassed by my current fitness. This was me, about a year ago. Almost literally, same height/build, didn't wrestle but did track/CC at similar paces. Started working out, got on the treadmill, hit the weights, did my first 5k in about 8 years this past June, (30ish mins, made me sad), did another in Sept. and had it down to 23. A ways to go, but good progress. Floating around 180 now, aiming for another 10 in the coming months. All you have to do is start, and don't compare yourself now to yourself then or you'll get really discouraged fast. I'm up to 8-10 mile runs and signed up for a Tough Mudder in May, so hopefully I can use that as motivation to work through the winter and put on some solid muscle! Which Mudder? We are looking at one Texas!

It really throws people for a loop. I'm a walking contridiction really! That will make it rough, yeah. I have bad knees, sometimes I feel a long run a week later, and my feet like to fall asleep around 3.5 miles...lol. But nothing compared to yours. Do what your body can handle, obviously pushing yourself to injury is going to make everything worse. Have you considered swimming? May be a viable alternative, then we can work on putting together a Formerly Fit triathalon team and each do a leg of it! And I'm doing the Twin Cities one in May, it's within driving distance and will afford enough time to recover from bruises/broken bones prior to walking down the aisle in July (I hope!).

We've been doing the Warrior Dashes, but the Mudder sounds like a challenge we'd like to try (we, being 3 other morons and me). I should really just work on getting my 5k times down more, but this sounds like a new and twisted kind of fun! The Swimming idea is a good consideration Mr. Barker. Almost no stress on the joints and a great overall body exercise!

I'm planning to do it with a couple of friends, my brother, and maybe 1-2 others, we're going as part of a team with a local gym (that I have no real affiliation with), so hopefully can work with them a bit for motivation and some of the group activities. It's sort of a bachelor party weekend for me, so we're going to make as much of an event out of the whole deal as possible. Planning to start the exercise reccomendations they have on their site next month, should be interesting.

I am in! I need to gain strength before the Warrior Dash in June. This should definitely help with that. Which Warrior Dash? Have you done one yet? Minnesota on June 30. This will be my first. A friend of my wife and I sent me a link and I made the mistake of saying we should do it. I have heard that they are a lot of fun so I am looking forward to it. They are hosting it at a ski mountain on the eastern side of the Twin Cities.

There was once a Will Farrel skit where he is sitting at the dinner table and yells I can do XX pushups in XX minutes. Some of my friends and I got together and started doing what we alled the 200 club. 10 pushups every minute for 20 minutes. Then it got to easy and we started doing 20 pushups a minute for 20 minutes. We even adopted standards for pushups. Chest must touch the ground and elbows must lock at the top.
So this military guy was telling us he can do 80 pushups in one minute. My friend and I tried and we did pretty well but could not do 80 in one minute. Then this guy starts and does 80 or so half pushups. Never touching the ground and never coming to the top. We smiled and applauded him. When he left we started doing pushups like those and I cannot tell you how many we could do... because it takes almost no effort.

I have been running in races for 40 years (oops, shouldn't have said that)and it is far and away the absolute most fun I have ever had at a race! We've done 3 different ones now and they are a blast!

I would try inspire my wrestlers by doing pushups with them but they always said it wasnt fair because I had been doing them longer. Then one day I go this little girl ( you may have heard of her, her name is Shannon Miller) from one of my other classes to come in and do pushups. She did 100 perfect pushups in under a minute. The boys started hitting the floor pretty hard! LOL For anyone that doesn't know, Shannon went on to win Olympic gold in gymnatstics and is them most decorated female gymnast in US history! I'm so mean

I went to high school with a guy who boasted some 50 pullups at once. He was really impressive. He was a shorter guy who was pretty muscular for his age. So one day we watched him do them. I will admit, he certainly did 40, and pretty well. I don't think any would have actually counted in a real competition. But the fact someone could do 40 or 50 pretty good pullups was impressive.

Beats me! If I stay in form I can't do more than 21-22 at once. I dont think I could do that many when I only weighed 175!

I am thinking the average male can only do 2 or 3 good pullups. Meaning come to a stop at the bottom, arms lock out, and chin over bar without swining or moving raising your chin to get it over. So 22 is pretty good. I think perfect pullups I can get 15 at best on a good day. But I weigh a lot more and have really long stick arms.
On a bad day I can at least get 12. But it is so hard to use perfect form.

On a bad day I can at least get 12. But it is so hard to use perfect form. I agree, you always want to cheat! I often say "weight lifting" is poorly named. It should be called "muscle contracting". Contract the muscle in a controlled fashion and the weight just happens to go up and down. Same with Chins, you can get obsessed with just getting your chin over the bar instead of working your back. Or at least I do!

I do as well but I think that is because pullups are a different beast. Most of the motion using the back and lats comes at the beginning of the motion. So it is easy to mentally focus on your back during that part but after a while your arms take over. You can combat this by taking a wider grip, but the wider grip (depending on how wide) can really limit the number of reps you do. It can also over incorporate your lats vs your back. This reminds me that today is back day for me. I really need to focus on this today.

<--Did back last night! Dont have to today! I mix narrow and wide on back day for the reasons you mention. I do underhand on arms day. Ok, we hijacked the pushups thread! Back on the floor everybody!

who here can do pushups with their hands behind their heads? lol, I have never tried... but I weight too much to make an attempt. Failure might have too many negative effects.

Some of the girls and I are doing this starting 1/1 and I thought some others might like to do it too. Basically, you start January 1 with 1 pushup and add one every day so that on December 31, you do 365. (Well, next year is a leap year, so it will be 366.) ...... I will post in here the number for the day, with January being self explanatory. Good luck. And here's to a stronger healthier you in 2012. COUNT ME IN - Definatly looking for something new & fun to get in / stay in shape {option to be determined after final count of Xmas cookies is tallied}

I do mixed-grip on upper-body days, 4 sets of 6-8, depending on how long I can hold the form. It is rough. I can do about 20 straight, if I'm fresh when I start. Oddly, as my weight's gone down, my ability to do more reps has not greatly increased!
