I have always found that milk and cookies work better than recess.

Done being productive today. Today was one of my co-workers that I have worked with for 10 years last day. She is taking on a great opportunity at a competitor with a great salary increase.

We're fed up with cable. Our cable box went out a few weeks ago after a power outage. It was old - we got it in 2008. They sent us a new one with more DVR capabilities - and didn't bother to mention it was going to cost more (and no - it never dawned on me). We're leaning toward getting an antenna to put in the attic to get the 'local' channels and then living with Netflix. Should save about $100 per month. We'll have to keep our high speed Internet, though.

We left DirectTv- we loved it.. but it was crazy paying $130 a month for something we never really watched. We settled for internet and Netflix...we should of done it a long time ago.

I would love to get rid of the satellite. But my rural internet isn't able to support that amount of streaming. frown

High speed internet through a cable, antenna, and one or more of those Netflix, Amazon, Hulu type services is the way to go if you live near a big city. Cable TV is a dying industry, especially if there was a more convenient way to get live sports.

I wouldn't mind $130 a month - ours is $180 a month now. We have high speed Internet and I called TWC to see how much it would be if we had that alone - $87. Wow! However we need higher speed since we use several devices at once.

Oh wow! We pay 60 a month for our internet & that's with Netflix included. Cable and internet is the business to get into!

So Cal
I've been thinking of ditching DirecTV and going with streaming and an antenna for local channels too. Not only is my monthly TV bill twice what it was 3 years ago (still no premium channels), the signal is always lost for part or all of a show on the DVR due to weather. And we hardly get any weather to speak of in So Cal!

Maybe I will call them, threaten to leave and if they do not lower my bill and re-align my dish, I'm gone. For what I pay per month, I could subscribe to a lot of streaming channels. I already have a Chromecast and a Roku stick that I barely use.

And for as often as Verizon spams me about FiOS, you'd think they would offer it in my area. I live in L.A. county for crying out loud!

what do the streaming channels cost on average? could I watch network shows on them? what about ESPN and NFL network if I only had an antenna?

there is a lot on U-Verse I don't watch but that which I do, I don't know if I can get without cable or a dish (History channel, American Heroes Channel, etc.)

Sling TV offers some options for $20 a month. I have resigned to the fact that the cable company will eventually own my soul. What ticks me off is that they offer packages to new customers that offer more than what I am getting for 1/3 the price I am paying. I call about every 2 years and complain, but the bones they throw to keep me are getting smaller and smaller.

I could live ( and have lived) without cable or satellite and just an antenna with Netflix. You can watch PBS online. However, if you want network shows you need HULU as well. It is exceedingly difficult to watch sports - especially college football without cable or satellite unless the game is being shown on CBS or one of the networks. The other games you miss completely.

That has nothing to due with cable. It is exceedingly difficult to watch sports because of NCAA, NFL management, MLB management NBA (because it is no longer a non contact sport) soccer because it is soccer...

With Hulu (or Hulu+ I guess), are there commercials when you watch the network shows? How soon after a show airs is it available? One of the main reasons I love my DVR is that I can speed through the commercials.

For the small price of your soul, or two or so bucks extra, Hulu+ offers a no commercials option. Worth every penny IMO. Shows that are available on Hulu will usually be available to watch the day following the air date.

Edit: i think its 8 George Washingtons for regular Hulu+ and 12 for the non commercial variety.

No, i am not getting paid to promote Hulu.

I'm waiting for AT&T Uverse to get out in my area. Thinking I'll switch to them and then switch back to my cable provider when the intro period is over. As stated above, the intro costs are usually about 1/3 of the regular so even if they charge for hook-up, I'll likely come out ahead.
