Amazing how some things are lost to history as I'd never heard about this until a few months ago:

The psych ward
We hosted a couple of Armenian girls a few years ago and we were unaware of the genocide until they shared their history with us. And yet the U.S. government refuses to acknowledge what occurred....

The guys in System of a Down are intensely passionate about this subject. I believe Serj, if not more of them, are Armenian.

AML/BSA Fines Total $5.2B Over Six Years: GAO

Financial institutions were assessed about $5.2 billion in fines, penalties and forfeitures in connection with Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering violations from January 2009 to December 2015, but none of the fines stemmed from NCUA enforcement actions, the Government Accountability Office reported.

In total, the GAO reported financial institutions paid $12 billion during that period, but that total included fines related to foreign bribery and violations of U.S. sanctions program requirements.

Last night my wife and I went to the theater to see "The Princess Bride." I've seen it over and over on TV, but never in a theater. The young Robin Wright is even more dazzling on the big screen. Inconceivable.

M or MM?

I see no consistency with the use of M or MM in identifying a number as being in thousands or in millions.

I've always considered M to mean thousand and MM to mean million, based on the Roman numeral rule.

Am I crazy or is this thing consistently misused?

Prior to banking I used "k" for thousand and "M" for million. It still throws me off when I read about someone buying a car for "40M".

I use K for thousand and M for Million, but I have seen M used for thousand and MM for Million.

The confusion comes from mixing Roman numerals and the metric system apparently. M is thousand in roman numerals - MM for million. In the metric system M is Mega or Million and K is Kilo or Thousand.

I am so glad to see this explained and was WAAAY too lazy to look it up! I have never known why some people use M or MM. I personally used K and M and always got thrown off when I see M for thousand.

So glad to see that this has been conclusively cleared up. I think it boils down to a combination of media using M as an abbreviation for Million, Compliance Officers correctly using M and MM (Of course), and confused Loan Officers using M and MM interchangeably within a loan write-up.

The combination will cause one to drink. smile

Y2M does not have the same ring as Y2K did though..... (for those of us who were in banking during that glorious time)

What a fiasco Y2K was. Much ado about nothing, but the panicking was fun to watch.
