I absolutely despise the NFL overtime rule though.

Where I am supposed to be
One of the best games I have ever watched. The level of QB play and strategy was great.

I agree with both posts.

At least 4 times, i was like "that's it. That's the dagger...this game is over"....only to be wrong.

You knew we were going to ask . . . so what is the best? I'm thinking Miami v. San Diego 1982?

ditto the OT rule. Might as well just toss a coin and give the winner the win. I cannot remember when I last saw the team that gets the ball first lose in OT.

well, thanks to the power of google, you can rest assured - stats from 1974-2003, there have been 325 OT games, the team that won the coin toss won 169 times, or 52%, 43% were won by the team that lost the coin toss, 141 games, and 15 games ended in a tie.

i don't see stats that update it past that point, but just did a pretty quick search, but doesn't sound like it is as prevalent as originally thought

To me, basketball has always had the best OT rules....play another (shortened) period, and play until the buzzer of that period.

And of course, baseball with extra innings is good too, with the same philosophy. Not a fan of either college or pro football OT rules currently, and not a fan of sudden death golf either. I prefer the British Open's 4 hole cumulative score method.

Apparently the KC/Buffalo game has caused a change in the NFL Playoff OT rules. If my CBS news feed is to be believed, beginning with the upcoming post-season, each team is guaranteed 1 possession. Even with an opening drive TD, the opposing team will possess the ball.

Wonder how long it will take this rule to make its way into the regular season games?

NFL overtime rules are already stupid IMO......this would at least be an improvement. No way you should lose a game in OT without ever having the opportunity to have possession of the ball. Imagine if NBA OT rules were similar.

I think it is a change in the right direction. I would prefer a game to end with no tie and to just add time to play. It will make games longer but it will produce better games I think. I hope it makes it to the regular season soon.

I'm okay with the occasional regular season tie, but I do agree I like the change. I like the idea of each team at least getting the ball.

I like the rule change. I would also implement it for the regular season. I'm not a big fan of ties.

Each team getting the ball is the best idea for sure. It is the best way to go about it. As far as how to add on time and how many times you would do so is a good debate to have.

I think it would be cool to just do two possessions. If both score then do two more possessions etc. It would not last as long as some would think.

Modified college rule OT. Start on the 50, equal possession. Once each team possesses the ball, the OT period is over. If still tied, another possession.

In either case, I definitely like the idea of equal possession. As infrequent as ties occur in regular season i still don't mind. But if doing away with ties gets the regular season OT rules changed, I'm all for it.

Agree totally. I'm a college football fanatic (well, starting to be a little less so with open transfer and NIL, but still a big fan). It's a stretch to say i'm even a casual fan of pro football.

I never had the exposure and started watching football in the last few years. I will attempt next year to give it more time. The rule set seems to be a better system.

I guess I fall somewhere between you two.

I'm a fan of the NFL. Happily watch. But I follow college closer and enjoy the games a bit more.

over the course of the 3+ hours it takes for the game to play out, each team averages just over 7 minutes of actual action when the ball is in play. surely if you can't score in that time the extra 1 minute 45 seconds in OT playing time probably won't be enough to compensate for an inadequate offense for one of the 2 teams involved...

so many other inconsistent and stupid rules the NFL has in place that need to be fixed...

I don't have a college team that I would like to watch. It will be interesting to try and find a team that I would like to follow. I have no ties to colleges and have lived all over the place.

HappyGilmore I see your point. It does seem odd to place so much emphasis on OT after so much time. I do think though in the last few minutes of the game when everyone is tired and emotions are high is when you could see something not as normal happen but your point still stands much greater than the OT talk. So many things in the NFL need to be fixed.

For me specifically, we need to have Refs either held accountable for clear game changing GARBAGE or we need a way to challenge and go over situations where a ref could easily cheat a game. I get sometimes bad calls happen but with all the great video enhancements in decades it is clear some refs take it on themselves to change the game.

Can i just throw in as an aside how sick i am of announcers (esp. in basketball) suggesting that referees should swallow their whistles late in the game and "let the players decide it". I don't want a game where it's open season on walking and fouling in the last minute because we must "let the players decide the game". A foul in the first minute of the game is still a foul with the game on the line.

RJ - i saw a video clip on ESPN that made a top 10 list the other day, the player took 4 steps after his final dribble (5 if you count the ball coming back up off the court) on his way to a dunk...i think traveling is now only called against bench players who come in as 8th or 9th in rotation and play about 12 seconds per game.

Yes, it's gotten ridiculous. Guys also slide their pivot foot and just flat change their pivot foot constantly without it being called too.

I can't agree with this enough. By not calling fouls, or throwing penalty flags, etc. that are obvious and SHOULD be called, it's just as much the ref affecting the outcome of the game as if he made an obviously bad call.

Depending on where you're at currently, there are major programs established all over the country. Fall in line with one of those.

Some of the bigger programs have fans all over the country - Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Ohio St (made me ill just saying it), Michigan, Notre Dame.....many more. Or another route is to follow an entire conference pretty closely. I follow Kentucky football pretty heavily, but really enjoy watching just about any SEC game. After all, the SEC is unquestionably the King of college football, right RJ? lol

Well, since before long every school will actually be IN the SEC, yes, they are the king of college football. If you don't believe it, just ask Gary Danielsen. smile

On that note, Buffalo, in it's constant state of being on the wrong side of calls and league decisions, is now responsible for major rule changes in both the NHL and NFL with the change in the crease rule after No Goal and the overtime rule announced this week.
