Our doxies are Tia (registered as Tiara..good and short since we are constantly calling her name to get out of stuff or to return home) and Hayley Jo (used to only use Jo if she wasn't listening but with a daughter named Kayleigh if we don't use Jo our daughter says "who" ). We went thru a baby name book when we picked the names.

My husband wanted to name our dog Ditka after Mike Ditka or Butkis (spelling?) after Dick Butkis, but neither son could say either name without giggling. Then my husband suggested Dick and the boys fell off their chairs laughing. We went with Walter (for Payton, of course!).

Good choice, assuming the dog is sweet and loveable, and can run run ruN!

If she's spayed that means she's about 6 months old already, right? What have they been calling her? You might build on that sound. I'll bet your son comes up with a name for her without even knowing it once he spends a day or two with her.

I'm big on people names for people only so my dogs have been named Tad, Tippy, Sunny and the like. The one to the left is Smidgen because she was just a smidgen of a puppy that fit in your hand with room left over the first time I saw her. She's high energy so her AKC name is "A Smidgen of Insanity"!

You can change a dog's name easily enough. My last dog was an English Cocker from the "j" letter so the breeder called her Jem. Turned out she wasn't sparkly enough to show so I got her at 1 year old and named her Truffle. Granted she was really smart but she got it right away.

Good luck and enjoy. Goldens are the #1 breed for good reason, especially how good they are with kids.

A friend gave me a beagle puppy. He said the puppys father was so lazy that he had to tie a pork CHOP around a rabbits neck for him to chase it. So, my puppys name is Chopper! He's 3 now and a total "lap dog".

Should name the dog BOL - then you can say "go fetch the ball BOL", to which your dog will respond - "I will, just give me a manute"

(you have to know basketball if there is a chance in he!! that you would laugh at this lame attempt at humor)

Wouldn't these names be even more appropriate for those dogs that look like bear cubs?

I named my dog Divot, you know. Like the chunk of dirt you take when you hit a golf ball?

I have a cairn terrier named Ian, (a Toto dog). My husbands first choice was Gort, after that alien robot in "When the Earth Stood Still" you know where the red light that comes from his eyes vaporizes everything in sight. Geez.

When I started testing the name around the house before tje dog came home he realized just how stupid it sounded. Imagine yelling "Gort, come" down the street when he wandered off. No doubt the neighbors would get a good laugh.

In any case I agree that you should wait for a few days before naming. Instead of Ian, we should have named him Hoover. He sometimes sounds like a Hoover when he's making his way around the kitchen. On the plus side, I don't have to sweep under the cabinets.

Actually my nephews named one of their puppies deogie...but of course they spell it DOG...they are only 4 and 5....I'm sure their father had some influence on that one.

back to my roots
Growing up we had a German Sheppard named Shadow because she followed my mother EVERYWHERE she went...very cute. Others we've had were: Max the Golden Retriever, Sox the Mutt, Rita the Rottweiler, Jake the other Golden Retriever, Millie the Sandy Dog (as found in the movie Annie) and Hillary Clinton the Black Lab. I suggested this name for her as a joke because she is cross-eyed and a little less than intelligent. I was only being funny but my father, being the joker that he is, fell in love with the name and she has been called that ever since.

My cats have been numerous: Sam, Orange Juice, Spencer, Bentley, Thumbprint, Mojo, Lucy, (Polka) Dot, Jade and Cleo.

My desert tortoises are Henry and Shilo.

My hamster was Charles.

My fish were Abraham (1 and 2), James, Susan and Jade the Fish

My two hermit crabs were Blue and Red.

My rosy boa constrictor was Rosie.

My horse was Arapahoe.

I've been told by several people from the South that Doodlebug is a common nickname. It seems to work well with the cocker spaniel personality!
