Looks like it's going to be a category 5, winds of 165 mph recorded a little bit ago. Its dropping slightly south and now looks to be making landfall early Saturday morning just south of Galveston.
My parents are out of Corpus already and should be here in DFW in about an hour or so. Hopefully their house won't flood while they're gone.
Hope Randy and the other BOLers in line for this are out and safe. With luck they'll post and let us know how they're doing.

Maybe they should quit giving such friendly names to hurricanes. I think people would be more likely to evacute from a Magnus, Zuess, or Goliath than Katrina, Rita, or Sam. Compare the following announcements. "Please make preparations to evacuate as Hurricane Buffie approaches the Gulf coast." vs. "Get the hell outta here! Heres comes Hurricane Lucifer, promising destruction of biblical proportions in accordance to divine prophecy!" Which would motivate you to leave?!?

Several of my friends are headed up this way. We tried to find hotel rooms for them in the DFW area lastnight and pretty much everything is gone....except for some expensives one in downtown. One hotel chain told us Lubbock was the closest place for an open room.
My wife just moved back from Galveston last month, she attends UTMB. I hope it doesn't damange the island too bad, we really like it down there.
The good news, if you can call it that, we need the rain here in DFW.

My grandma lives alone in Harlingen, in a trailer. She won't leave. I know that Harlingen is not an area that is talked about as a high concern, but does anyone know if it is?

We are battening down the hatches here in Austin. They are saying it could still be tropical storm strength when it reaches us.

Barbarian, Tropical Depression Godzilla just doesn't cut it!
Do you think we could be seeing the first ever catagory 6 hurricane?
Galvaston still holds the record for the worst natural disaster (loss of life) on American soil. They had a hurricane in 1900 which took 6,000 lives. But that was before the weather bureaus were formed and could give warnings to evacuate. Imagine! A storm the size of Rita bearing down on your city, and you don't know it's coming. Scary!
God bless and watch over all our coastal friends.

It's now at 175 mph - same as Katrina at her worst. Predicted to make landfall around 2am Saturday morning. They evacuated my grandmother's nursing home yesterday to San Antonio. They are saying by the time it gets to DFW over the weekend it could *still* be a category 1. That's amazing. Galveston's still predicted to be the eye of the storm with a dead-on hit and a 50 foot surge - their seawall is only 17 feet.

Makes me rethink the question, should they rebuild New Orleans? My answer now is no. Or, they should rebuild New Orleans for residences and businesses much farther inland, with only shipping businesses on the port.
Looks like we will also have the same question, should we rebuild Galvaston?
Man, how is this country's economy going to take this? I am approaching retirement age, I don't need a depression.

Called several of my friends in the Galveston/Houston area this morning.
One of them has decided to stick it out and have a Marga-Rita party. He did say people are panicing. Stores around Houston are running out of everything and closing for the storm and gas stations are starting to run out of gas. That is why he decided to stay.
Everyone else I talked with are moving for higher ground...VERY slowly. One person got on the road last night at 10:30. A drive that would normially take her 2 hour has taken her 7. They will still be in traffic when the storm hits at this rate.
As far as Galveston, I pray that it doesn't hit it head on. They have really done a lot to clean up the island over the past several years and this could set it back for quite a while.

Ron, I agree, Americans are not quitters. But, before we rebuild, we had better give it a good long think. Big time changes have to be made. Only a fool builds a sand castle in the surf and expects it to last.

Nanwa, I kind of agree with you on the rebuilding. Biloxi was destroyed in the 60's by a hurricane and we rebuilt. Now it's destroyed again. How many times are we going to rebuild in an area we know is prone (sp) to natural disasters? I agree that America is strong and we are not quitters, but also let's not be dumb.
