#58098 - 01/30/03 08:02 PM Rate Increase based on "roll of the dice"

Our branches have been given the challenge of coming up with unique ways to get new business. One branch has an idea to let customers roll a pair of dice for a chance to increase the annual percentage yield on new or renewed CDs, based on the customer's dice roll. I believe this is simply a bonus rate of interest. Does anyone think this could be considered a lottery type of activity which would be illegal for a national bank? Or do you see any other problems with this type of promotion?

Barring state problems, the roll of the dice entitles them to a rate bump. I don't see it as a lottery if all customers opening those types of accounts are entitled to try. Everyone wins who participates. A lottery doesn't allow that.

I agree with Andy, but invite you to consider that those that don't get a high roll may feel cheated. They know that you are willing to offer more, but they don't get it. Sometimes advertising like this can have a reverse effect. Just something to consider.

You might also consider that someone could be offended if they thought the dice roll was somehow tied to gambling. Hopefully it isn't likely, but it seems like everything offends somebody.

I've seen promotions where if it snows a certain amount everyone gets a 2% bump - you could maybe do something like that specialized to your area (HS football team goes to State, no tornadoes this season, etc.)
