(I know, but I just had to do it... )

NJ didn't pass a civil rights law, judges are forcing this on NJ.

The state gov't has been authorized to either incorporate homosexual couples into the current marital statutes or draft a new law covering civil unions.

The state is being forced to comply with a court ruling. Don't try and sugar coat this DQ.

This seems a bit backward doesn't it. The court telling the legislature that it has to write a new law that will comply with its ruling. Who is actually running NJ, the courts or legislature?

It seems like it's about time there is some equity in this country for all families.

What is your definition of "all families"?

All families. Pretty self-explanatory.

No it is not "pretty self-explanatory". Is it a man and woman; two men; two women; two women and a man; two women and two men? Any combo just as long as they call themselves a "family"?

And who gets to decide what a "family" is? Judges? State Legislators who are represent the people?

Welcome to the slippery slope.

I think that this ruling will wake up the GOP base and put the Foley mess out of their mind.

Actually, it is the New Jersey Constitution that is the supreme law of the state. The ruling says that the equal protection clause in the NJ Constitution requires same sex couples to have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.

On the news this morning they said that a same sex marriage that occurs in Massachusetts doesn't have to be recognized in any other state if that state doesn't have legislation allowing it.
Basically, it's only truly recognized if you are a resident of Massachusetts.

The story I saw also went on to said that New Jersey's authorization by the court did no such thing, but allows their legislators to make that decision if they so choose.

All the New Jersey court did is say it's okay if the state congress puts it into place (from what I understand, anyways).

People are spending way too much time arguing about this, IMO. Let people live their lives the way they choose, they're not hurting anybody...

OK, I would say a family is any group of people who live together and co-mingle their lives and/or finances. If we are talking marriage then I would say any combination of two people.

Technically, no state has to recognize a marriage performed in another state even it's a marriage between a man and a woman.

Way, way south.
Is there a large g@y population in NJ?

With the war on terror and all of the other crazy things like child molesters and illegal drugs around, why is this even on the forefront of judicial issues?

How funny - homosexual couples already had the same rights! Those zany judges!

Maybe you should inform the New Jersey Supreme Court.

They seem to have the idea that they know more about New Jersey law than you do!

Actually, they didn't say it was OK, they mandated it and gave them six months to write up the laws...

And, you are right... if a lot of people would just mind their own business and live an let live, the world would be a happier place.
