Sweetpeas, please read my entire definition. Marriage = Man and woman. The procreating part was my opinion.

FWIW, you are incorrect. The first marriage, of Adam and Eve, was reported in Genesis 2. The first procreation, of Cain and Abel, was reported in Genesis 4.

Not incorrect according to Science.

1. What science is that?
2. Why did you capitalize "science?"
3. Please explain your statement.

From what I remember from college, human life has been around longer than the Bible says human life has been around. I capitalized Science becasue I was referring to it as an authority.

but just because it's in Webster's doesn't really mean anything. Words are added each year. Definitions get updated. Webster's merely reflects language as we use it. It doesn't legislate the way things should be.

Hey Sweetpeas, why do YOU think our forefathers created marriage?

Also the "same question" as was asked in the 50's, except that back then everyone acknowledged that the courts were a part of government and society and not some "elite".

I suppose you think it is always a good idea to achieve your desired ends through means of a court. I think that is a bad idea, regardless of the ends desired. I would not support a supreme court decision that found a constitutional right to life for an embryo, even though I would agree with the result. I would prefer that society came to that conclusion and enacted laws that it believed in. I suppose the left gave up any such belief in self-government long ago.

The consititution is and must be the supreme law.

And it ought to be interpreted in recognition of the fact that society has defined marriage in a particular manner for thousands of years.

Not necessarily. You could marry Ron, and it would be an uncivil union.

Then why did it continue long after those were no longer an issue?

There are still legal benefits to marriage. I don't see that they ever ceased to be an issue.

Here's a question for you. How does it harm your marriage and the vows you made with your husband if gay couples were allowed to marry?

That's a cheap shot and not like you. There are Christians who can be quite faithful without buying into a literal interpretation of the Bible.

It changes the definition. I will no longer be in a marriage, I will be in a civil union. Frankly, I like being in a marriage, and don't like someone changing the rules to suit them. I followed the rules that were already established.

And, without artificial insemination, survival of our species becomes an issue.

How is that a cheap shot? You clearly indicated that you recognized Science as an authority, and did not recognize the Bible as authoritative. The implication is that, if there is a conflict--whether perceived or real--between the two, you will take the word of Science.

My point was that, since you and I apparently appeal to different authorities, we will no doubt differ on issues. Knowing that will factor into how and when I may choose to debate you.

It really doesn't matter if you call it a "marriage" or not. I seriously doubt that the gay and lesbian community will argue on the name of the union as long as they can have one.

So it really doesn't harm your union. You just don't like it.

I felt your implication was that the two can't co-exist and IMO they can. Quite nicely.

But it doesn't harm your union? I don't care if you like it or believe in it. I'm asking you how it weakens the bond between you and your husband. Are you saying you wouldn't have married him if the rules were different?

I think you're right. I just find the whole "well you can't call it marriage" argument to be strange.

In my opinion, they co-exist quite nicely, too. Sorry my initial terseness lead to lack of clarity.

No, it wouldn't harm my marriage. But alot of things in this world don't harm my marriage that I don't think should become law.
