I am trying to identify:

1. movies that deal with any kind of financial crime that would be reportable on a SAR;

2. specific scenes from movies relating to that subject that are noteworthy.

For example, in Lethal Weapon 2, Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) was an accountant who helped the mob launder its money and ended up embezzling from them. In a very memorable scene, he explains how he laundered their money.

1. SCARFACE - Especially the scene wher ehe meets with his banker, and the banker is explaining that he needs to raise fees or he will be unable to "clean" the funds for Al Pacino anylonger.

2. BLOW - This movie, which is based upon a true story, shows plenty of scenes of rooms filled to the ceiling with cash derived from illegal narcotis, and the funds being carried in bag loads and maybe boxloads into banks.

Way, way south.
That one John Grisham novel / movie with Tom Cruise had to do with money laundering by the mob. "The Firm" I think.

"Derailed" out last year with Clive Owen and Jennifer Anniston. The poor guy is blackmailed into cleaning out his savings in cash. I leaned over to my wife in the theater and whispered "No way he do that transaction that fast. They would have to do a CTR!" She thinks I'm a nerd.

How about the scene in Office Space where they realize they need to launder the money, but they don't know how, so they look up "money laundering" in the dictionary? It's a funny movie, but the whole thing is about computer finanical crime.

Hahaha - I think most of us compliance peole have had that experience watching a crime story and pointing out what we know.

Another movie - Ghost - remember when the main villian is trying to access the private banking account of Patrick Swayze, as well as Whoopie Goldberg, to withdraw all of the funds. She is questioned on her ID, if memory serves me correctly.

There is a scene after the Mask robs the bank where the Owners son gets all over Ibcus because he was late. Ibcus goes off on him about using the bank as his own personal piggy bank and threatens him with a vacation at Club Fed.

The Shawshank Redemption- Andy creates a fictitious ID which the prison warden uses to open accounts for laundering his bribery proceeds. Andy later uses this same persona to clean the warnden out.

The Prime Gig- This whole movie is about a telemarketing scam, and one employee's attempt to 'scam the scammer'.

The USPS has a whole series of 6 short movies on DVD (designed to be like a TV series) dealing with identity theft issues - Telemarketing scams, mail fraud, etc.

You can get free copies by calling 1-877-987-3728

Dave - I called the number, but it gave me the FTC rather then the USPS. Are you sure this is the right number?

Sorry -

They have changed the process (because people were ordering and selling). You have to get them thru your local USPS Inspection Service Office. You can look that up, or you can call
800-STAMP-24, Option 1, and ask them for the phone number of your local office.

There is a scene in the Movie BOUND, where the money is covered in blood so they 'clean" the money, iron it and hang it all over the appartment on clothesline with clothes pin...very powerful visual..I think the camera angle is askewed and slo mo.

Thanks Dave. This number works, and you can also go to USPS.COM and in the searchbox, type in "Postal Inspector". You will be prompted for your zip code, then the nearest Postal Inspector along with telephone will be provided. Call and make the request.

No problem - each of the DVDs also have a 1-2 minute snippet included of the longer show, and my local office provided those to me very recently in a format that will allow me to include them in the Fraud Center I maintain on our web site.

CubDave, I called to order but was told there was only DVD. Are all shows on the same one?
