Do you remember "Elf" They must have taken years of dust off him to bring him back for commercials.

Do you mean "Alf"?

You're officially old when sales clerks, and fast food order takers call you "Sir" or "Ma'am." Oh - and the guy behind the counter at the liquor store no longer asks to see your I.D.

I remember this show and I think you may be referring to "The Love Boat", but I'm not certain.

No, Bonnie had it right. Happy Days was the show to which I was referring. Of course "The Love Boat" may have also been piloted there, but I don't remember it as such.

I also remember The Man from Uncle. One day I wondered why that very cool show wasn't in re-runs. Then I saw an episode on TNT. Jeeze it sucked. No wonder we watched it about the same time as My Mother the Car.

The first couple of years (or was it just the first year) of Happy Days was very 50s. They intended it to be filmed using Hollywood movie techniques. Then they made the mistake of taking it before a live audience--it went down hill from there. If you want a wonderful piece of TV history buy the DVD of the first couple of years. It got downright silly later.

"Gilligan's Island" was the best....

I believe Get Smart was a take-off of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. "Uncle" was a poor-man's version of Mission Impossible.

BTW - thanks Andy. I was beginning to think I was the only person who remembered "My Mother the Car." And how about "Plese Don't Eat the Daisys", or "It's About Time" which was a short-lived show where two astronauts were accidently sent back in time and had to live with a tribe of cavemen (and cavewomen!)

Add "77 Sunset Strip" with Ed "Kookie" Barnes who I think was a parking lot attendent. How thrilling that was.

I'm fearing this is turning into a TV Land Retromercial.

Seems like things always go in 20-30 year cycles (I guess it's the next generation wondering how things were for the previous one). In the 70's anything to do with the 50's was really popular and we had shows like Happy Days. I also remember dressing up in jeans and a white T-shirt (with a fake pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve) for "Greaser Day" every year in high school.

Now, "That 70's Show" is a popular TV show for my kids and our daughter's high school concert last week had a segment where everyone dressed in outfits reminiscent of the 70's.

That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was mighty sailing man, the skipper brave and sure,
Five passengers set sail that day for a 3-hour tour. (A 3-hour tour.)

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost. (The Minnow would be lost.)

The ship set down on the shore of this - uncharted desert Isle, with
Gilligan, the Skipper too,
the Millionare, and his wife,
(first season only) The Movie Star and the rest
(after the first season) The Movie Star...
The Professor aaaand Maryann -

Here on Gilligan's Isle!

Yes - right now... I have no life.

I found the theme song on the Internet recently. A good use of my time! I did not know who Imogene Coco was at the time, but I learned that she was on the show--she was brilliant. (Kids, you may remember her as the aunt tied to the top of the car in National Lampoon's VACATION.)

Do you remember a late 60s short-lived comedy about a bumbling super hero--I think he had to take a little pill to have powers (was not a cartoon--Underdog). I think the theme song said something about him being in his pajamas.

Remember Deputy Dog???

Memory lane is a long road, a l o n g road. I remember those too.

And to think kids today waste time on MTV and HBO.

Gilligan was good, but IMHO nothing beats Lucy.

So why did the Howells have all of that luggage, money and jewelry with them?

I love that show...it reminds me of when I was a kid.. That aweful green phone on the wall...we had one just like it....plus an orange one too. Those giant glass grapes on the coffee table are exactly what my mom had on ours. I was only recently able to get her to get rid of the plastic fruit. So much of what is in that house we had. It's like they went to my parents garage sale 20 years ago and saved it until now.

Because they could!

Better question is - why would a man as wealthy as Thirston Howell the 3rd be on a regular commercially chartered boat? You'd think the man could afford his own 100-foot yacht with attendent staff!

If you are asking because of my location...I'm not a Fargo native. I grew up in the Twin Cities.... I only moved here in the last 3-4 years.

Short answer to your question. I have no idea!

For the same reason Ginger had an endless supply of designer gowns.
