Banks Leverage Retail Environment: What is teller-assisted self-service?

Question:
With kiosks emerging as a transaction service alternative for banks, we've heard a lot about new service solutions and concepts. In particular, what is teller-assisted self-service?
Answer:

Unlike grocery store check-outs or even airline check-in areas, branch banking environments consist of an ongoing interaction between the customer and the teller. Teller-assisted self-service banking is an approach that allows the customer to manage their own financial transactions on the kiosk, while maintaining the teller as a critical component in the overall experience. The teller monitors kiosk activity for one or more customers and can take over transactions where assistance is needed. Because the kiosk automates much of the mundane transactional tasks, the teller also has time to review CRM information and make cross-sell/up-sell recommendations to customers.
