Effect of Customer Pulling Credit Report

Question:
I have had several customers ask if they should check their credit report from annualcreditreport.com. I tell them not to if they don’t feel their credit has been compromised. Am I right? How much effect does pulling an unnecessary credit report have on someone's credit score? Other lenders have told me that it will cause the score to go down, but nobody could tell me by how much.
Answer:

Answer by Dan Persfull: To the best of my knowledge the customer requesting their credit report once per year as they are allowed does not affect their credit score. If it did it would be a deterrent for them to take advantage of what they are entitled to by law, therefore defeating the purpose.

Answer:

Answer by Kathleen Blanchard: An individual ordering copies of their own credit report has no effect whatsoever on the credit score.

Answer:

Answer by John Burnett: You actually should encourage customers to take advantage of the law and order a copy each year from each of the three major bureaus. Staggering those requests so that they are four months apart will maximize the consumer's ability to "catch" any fraudulent or incorrect entries.
