Fill SAR if Total Dollar Amount Under $5000.00?

Answered by:

Question:
We have a customer that is suspected of check kiting, but the total dollar amount involved is less than $5000.00. Should I still file a SAR?
Answer:

There's no need to file unless the dollar amount of the kite reaches the $5,000 threshold, but you have the option of filing for smaller amounts. Until you get to $5,000 you might be better off focusing on damage control, and take appropriate action to shut down the kite. Unlike Charlie Brown, your bank's customer won't always have a run-in with a "kite eating tree."
