Investigation timeframe

Answered by:

Question:
Today I was notified of a large internal embezzlement and I have only had a couple of hours to begin the investigation. Senior management wants to know when how long it will take me to find the culprit. How should I respond to them?
Answer:

Never tell management a date when the investigation will be resolved. Instead educate them on what has to happen before the people involved are even interviewed. Let them know you will take the time to do a thorough investigation. A rushed investigation can lead to erroneous conclusions and lawsuits.
