If your use of the phrase "fraudulent check" refers to a check that is a counterfeit or one on which the issuer's signature is unauthorized or forged, you only had until your midnight deadline to "return" the check unpaid.
If it's a remotely created check and your depositor provides an affidavit that the check was not authorized for payment to the named payee in the amount of the check, you can use the Federal Reserve Bank Check Services check adjustment service within a period set in the Check Adjustments manual.
If Check Adjustments Services did not exist, you would be able to do a direct warranty claim on the depositary bank in the case of an unauthorized remotely created check under Regulation CC ยง 229.34(b) for up to a year.
