Malicious text messaging is on the rise

Answered by:

Question:
I hear about phishing all the time but what is this new thing called smishing and do I need to be concerned?
Answer:

Smishing is another variation of phishing and it is growing rapidly. Think of it as phishing by text message on your cellphone. The term comes from the fact that text messaging uses SMS or short message service. Smishing is a malicious text message sent to your phone and meant to look like it is coming from someone you know, or your financial institution! Just as with a phishing email, if you receive a suspicious message, delete it!
