Night Inspection Tips

Answered by:

Question:
Any tips for performing night inspections?
Answer:

I have a number of suggestions, which I've outlined below. In addition, the Night Inspection Evaluation Form I developed has been placed in the Security Power Tools section of BOL's Banker Tools page.

When performing night inspections, a variety of problems can emerge at different locations. Some locations have front and rear ATMs or Night Depositories. The Night Depositories sometimes are overlooked by Branch Personnel performing perimeter reviews. We have witnessed problems with lights, shrubbery or even garbage cans placed in front of or around the letter drop Night Depository.

It is recommended you have someone not affiliated with your institution perform your night inspections at least once per year. Perhaps you could make an agreement with another Security Officer or outside consultant to perform night inspections for you. They will review your branch without unintentional blindness as the location is new to them.

Marketing and Compliance Departments might also benefit from your night inspection program. When performing night inspections we have found many branches that you could not identify as a bank. If the people looking for your branch to perform inspections can't find it, you could be losing fee income at your ATMs. The Compliance area could have your inspector review for necessary signage at the ATM. The cost for the review could then be shared with the other departments.
