Validity of Verbal Stop Payment

Answered by:

Question:
Is the verbal stop payment on a check still only good for fourteen days? I just want to make sure there haven't been any recent changes.
Answer:

Except for stop payments on certain electronic fund transfers, covered by Regulation E, and automated clearing house transfers, covered by NACHA rules, stop payments are covered under the Uniform Commercial Code in your state. In the model version of the UCC, the provision is found in Section 4-403, and it provides for a 14-day effective period for oral ("verbal" means expressed in words, "oral" means spoken) stop payment orders is fourteen days.

Some states do not provide for oral stop order at all. Check your state's version of the UCC for the definite answer to your question.
