This is a frequent question. Some institutions have a policy of waiting until the robber exits, and other policies say to activate the alarm “when safe to do so.” We want to notify law enforcement as soon as possible, as most robbers who are caught are apprehended close to the scene. I believe the hesitancy comes from a fear of the police response. Have a conversation with your local agency to determine what their response will be in the event of an alarm. Hopefully, they have a policy to remain outside your office until a designated employee exits to speak with them rather than entering the building.
