SCOTUS unanimously agrees in its June 12, 2017, ruling that a bank that collects on debts it has bought and holds for its own account is not a debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
The Supreme Court has made the practice of "patent trolling" more difficult in a May 22, 2017, ruling on how to interpret the patent venue laws. In TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Foods Group Branch LLC, the justices held that the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which handles all patent appeals, has been using the wrong standard since 1990 to decide where a patent lawsuit can be brought. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit held that TISA/APY violations resulted from the way a financial institution disclosed a rate that was only applicable for a portion of the year.
