As of the beginning of 1995, 11% of teller stations in community banks are run on a completely manual system. 60% have 'dumb' automation, and 29% have intelligent machines.

On the platform side, 55% of community banks have intelligent desktop automation; 39% have 'dumb'; and 6% have none.

The Postal Service will honor Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards, as well as national and regional debit cards when they finally get their 50,000 card authorization terminals in place in 33,000 post offices in the United States.

Legislation has been introduced in Massachusetts that proposes cutting the state tax on financial institutions by 2%, to 10.5%. Legislation was defeated in Minnesota that would have raised the state tax on financial institutions nearly 100%, from 9.8% to 18%

The most popular "flat tax" being proposed in Congress is 17% tax on individuals and businesses-no credits/no deductions.

500,000 of the 12 million GM credit card holders have redeemed their rebates to buy or lease a GM car or truck to date.

The average bounced-check fee today is $16. Average charge for a stop-payment is $13.57, according to a study by Sheshunoff Information Service.

The Sheshunoff study also reports that 44% of the financial industry's service fee income comes from bounced-check charges.

85% of banks now charge their customer an average of $5.29 for a returned deposited item.
