When you have dorment accounts that are subject to escheat do we have a time line for escheating those accounts? Is it within a given period of to report or just done annually?

The abandoned property process (sometimes referred to as escheat) is controlled strictly by the law of the states in which the bank and its customer are domiciled. Check with your state's Abandoned Property Office or post a similar question in your state's individual forum.

FYI-in PA you go to Dept of Treasury-Unclaimed Property.

Also, I just found out that if an account at your bank has an out-of-state address, you should send the balance to the other state. All these years we have been forwarding all escheated accounts & property to our own state.

The funds should be escheated based on the last known address of the customer. Some states, however, have reciprocity agreements and will take money on behalf of multiple states. Check your state rules for more info.

The naupa.org website is central location for unclaimed property guidance and links to each state's rules.
