As a large bank, how do you report personal (unsecured)loans for personal investment purposes? Are they classified as personal or business loans, or not at all? I'm having a hard time entering them into the CRA Report.

According to the Call Report instructions, loans to individuals for investment purpose would be reported on RC-C Line 9 - thus such loans would not be reported on the CRA LR as a Small Business Loan.

From the Call Report Instructions:
(5) Loans to individuals for investment (as distinct from commercial, industrial, or
professional) purposes other than those for purchasing or carrying securities (report as all
other loans in Schedule RC-C, part I, item 9).

Bonnie is correct, loans to individuals for persoanl investments should not be reported as small business loans.

Let's discuss this further. What are you considering "investment" purposes? Raw land? Oil and gas reserves? Equipment / vehicles for resale? I always look at it as how closely related to the borrower's primary occupation. For example, an attorney invests in oil and gas wells for exploration. Consumer purpose?

Much of the Call Report, and most of CRA, is still more art than science. The Call Report instructions separate out investments that are for commercial, industrial, or
professional purposes.

You are correct in that you would need to look at how closely the purpose of the investment matches the borrower's profession. I would think the analysis would be much the same as it would for Reg Z when determining if an investment is business or personal.
