$400. tax credit just because we work???

We haven't done our taxes yet. Collegue said they had a $400. tax credit by virtue of the fact that she and her husband work....you know anything about that one???

Yes. You actually get rewarded for working this year. You appear to be one of the over 110 million working Americans who qualify for the Recovery Act’s Making Work Pay Tax Credit, saving individuals up to $400 per year, and saving married couples up to $800 per year. You should have received the credit incrementally in your paychecks in 2009 and should continue to collect it throughout 2010. Even though you probably received the benefit of this credit in your paychecks from adjusted tax withholding by your employer, you must still claim the credit on your tax return. Learn more about the Making Work Pay credit.

I do mine on April 14th every year...there is no benefit for doing earlier, I've not had a refund in close to 7 years

Yes, you definitely want to take your $400 credit (for both you and your spouse if you both worked) on Schedule M. I wrote more about it here.

I do mine on April 14th every year...there is no benefit for doing earlier, I've not had a refund in close to 7 years If you file electronically you can set it up so no matter when you do your taxes and file the return, the amount you owe will be debited via EFT on 4/15.
