I'm going to Chicago for my annual baseball trip. We'll be going to both the WHite Sox and Cubs parks (I can't wait to see Wrigley!!!). I'll be staying Downtown - does anyone have any suggestions for things to do or see while I'm there? Restaurants? Museums? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Chicago is full of stuff to do! Start with Millenium Park, which is right between Lakeshore drive and the loop. All the major museums are great - the Art Institute will make your head spin if you like fine art; the Field Museum is lots of fun.

If you like tapas, Cafe Iberico is in the loop and delivers very good, authentic Spanish tapas.

things to see....all the BOLers within 50 miles of that God forsaken city....y'all should organize an offsite for BOL posters to gather, at some good adult beverage place.....

get corky girl to crochet name tags, get some peeps because most of the posters in the Chicago area love them....

This thread:

has lots of great Chicago restaurant recommendations.

As for museums, I'd highly recommend the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, and the Adler Planetarium. If you have time to see others, then the Chicago History Museum is awesome, as well as the Shedd Aquarium (but the aquarium/oceanarium are doing renovations, so some exhibits may be closed - maybe their website gives more detailed information).

Oh, and be sure to go see Navy Pier - ride the ferris wheel after dark for a great view of the skyline. And stop by Buckingham fountain after dark - beautiful. smile

I've lived within hours of the city my whole life and have never done the ferris wheel on Navy Pier. Totally terrifies me!!!

You must have Lou Malnati's Pizza!! (Not sure if it is in the other thread).

U.S. Cellular Field (formerly Comiskey Park...sigh) allows for tailgating in the lots before White Sox games - which is hard to do at Wrigley since parking obnoxious.

My favorite thing I've done at Navy Pier is take a ride on the sailing ship. Great view of the city from out on the lake.

Do not miss the Sears Tower (now the Willis Tower). The view is spectacular. Ride the free trolley's around downtown, so much fun and you get the flavor of the city.

When my brother and sis-in-law lived there, I'd visit and we went to the Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Sears Tower, a Cubs game, and sampled some of the MANY bars around Wrigley field (not all in one trip) wink . If you're a total nerd like me, you might enjoy the hologram museum (I forget the actual name).

You might also take some extra cash in case any political seats come up for sale. laugh

You don't say how much time you'll have to spend or whether or not there will be young'ins along. Some of these suggestions lean toward more time and/or kiddos in tow.

I did the ferris wheel on Navy Pier about eight years ago now. It has little glass enclosed pods with facing seats. MOML and our grangirl sat across from me laughing about how the lovely shades of green I was turning complimented the sky and water behind me. ::shudder:: not for the faint of heart.

Do yourself a favor and google touring in Chicago. We're just listing some favs. Online sites will help you narrow down what will be open, when and help you plan the most of your time there. Enjoy my former home town. Nice place to visit but I'm glad I don't live there anymore. smirk

I'll be there for 6 days. I'm going with 8-10 friends. We go to a different MLB city every year. The whole group will only be there until Sunday (we're going to see the White Sox), but I'm staying until the following Wednesday to catch a couple Cubs games at Wrigley.

So for 3 days I'll be with a group, for 3 I'll be flying solo - it should be fun!

But if you're watching that many ball games, you really won't have museum time so go for the landmarks life Buckingham Fountain, etc. Do the Google search and see what fairs or exhibitions will be going on. There's at least one or more a week in Chicago. Navy Pier hosts food festivals so you could hit that and the ferris wheel before a night game. Have fun!

If you like steak I highly recommend Stetsons in the Hyatt Regency. I was there last week and it was the best I have had in years. It actually melted in your mouth. It's not cheap but worth every penny!

If you like zoos, there is a free little zoo downtown near the campus of all the museums, and the Brookfield zoo is one of the best in the country. The dolphin exhibit there blows the Shedd away.

Lincoln Park Zoo is the one downtown. Brookfield is absolutely amazing, but might be a bit of a hike, depending on if FBH is staying downtown or suburbs, north or south?

Can't go wrong with USDA Prime, unless of course you order it well done.

I'll be staying Downtown at the Embassy Suites. Maybe I'll register under "FBH" and see if any local BOLers stop by...

I prefer my steak on the rare side of medium rare.

Ed Debevic's for 50's casual diner fun place. Walking distance from Embassy Suites. Definitely take walk or run around Oak Street Beach.

Hello, Embassy Suites Hotel front desk employee... can you patch me through to Fighting Blue Hen's Room, please? laugh

Check out any festivals (many are free) going on while you're here in August:
http://chicago.metromix.com/events/article/chicago-festival-guide-2010/339943/content

If you're here 8/14 - 8/15, both the Air & Water Show (free) and Wrigleyville Summerfest are a ton of fun and well worth braving the crowds. smile
