Alright I have a question on the pushups, and i apologize if it's already been asked.

What's better, doing the pushups as fast as you can, or dropping slowly, holding, and pushing back up slowly?

It's not a question of better. It's a question of what it is you are trying to train.

slow, controlled pushups have a greater 'time under tension' and will tend to develop muscular strength.

rapid pushups have less total time under tension, and train plyometric strength, combined (when you are capable of sufficient volume) with a 'cardio' effect.

There's nothing to say that you can't mix them.

Here's something to try:

set a timer for 20 seconds.
do 1 pushup that takes 10 seconds to descend and 10 seconds to pushup.
rest 20 seconds
now do as many pushups as you can in 20 seconds. You have to keep working for the entire 20 seconds.
repeat that pair 4 times.

Ok check this schedule out:

Monday: Aqua Aerobics - light to moderate intensity 45 min.
Tuesday: Body Pump - All over strengthening with a weight bar including pushups, planking, back, shoulders, quads, triceps and biceps. 45 min Still hurting from this one smile
Wednesday: alternating weeks Core training, High intensity with weights and aqua aerobics 45 min
Thursday: Zumba-moderate intenstity cardio 45 min
Friday: Day off
Saturday: Zumba 1 hr high intesity
Sunday Day off or 1 hour treadmill - light to moderate

Is that a good mix or would you "more seasoned" exercisers do something different?

On paper, it doesn't seem to have enough recovery built into it. How do you feel with this schedule; sore, creaky, are you getting enough sleep?

Right now I am pretty sore. It was from the Tuesday class. Otherwise everything is pretty good. What would you skip or do differently?

My goal is to lose weight. I really want to win this competition they have going on at work. I don't want to sabatoge it by trying to do much too soon. Of course I am focusing on diet as well. Overall fitness and strength is also a goal as I would like to start snowboarding again.

Bec, most of this is cardio and has some viability. So if you feel ok, its probably alright. Body Pump and Core training would be better with a day in beteween (Tue - Thur), but if you are doing classes, it may not be an option.
HG is dead on with getting enough rest and your diet is critical with this schedule. you need quality calories, no junk! Good proteins and complex carbs. A good multivitamin daily and even some glutamine will help.
Keep up the impressive work!

Thank you very much! I appreciate the wisdom and advice. Just want something that is sustainable and effective. I think this schedule will do it of course until it all changes next quarter smile

Pedaling along a scenic highwa...
Just have pushups to report. I'm sore, too. I can't wait until NEXT (that means the one after the one coming up, to clarify) Sunday, when the pool hall will be closed for good. smile

Finished yesterday with 68 total in 4 sets

19, 16 and 16 this morning. Eeked out the 19. But, I was up too late and ate too late last night, having gone a full 10 hours without food, so I didn't sleep well.

Without the pool hall to keep me out late, I'll be able to settle into a better routine, mixing in other muscle groups, spending more time cooking good food, etc.

I'm looking forward to being able to pull the bike down off the wall of the garage and start logging some miles. Strengthening the legs and building cardio will definitely help with these pushups.

Good questions, Bec. Keep it up. I'm learning a ton from all you guys. It's been a solid 18 years since I've really done much of anything other than riding a mountain bike for fun. Thanks HG, Matt and BCubed.

I know this thread is technically the pushup thread, but my heart is happy that it seems that everyone has been motivated to do just a little bit more than you used to.

Trying new things, pushing yourself a little more. I love it!

Kit, it really has inspired me. The pushups were the catalyst and now with everyone on here posting and such it has inpired me to push myself a little bit. Who knew what pushups could do right????

I am so happy to be a part of this! What a network of encouragement and accountablilty.
