I was running with 15 pounds of extra weight on me not long ago doing 5k's, so I really expect that to be the least complicated aspect of it for me. Just need to get an idea of how big the tires are that need to be flipped and if it's realistic to do by the end of the month. I suppose I could manage it, but don't want to injure myself doing something "just for fun" that's going to mess up the rest of my workout plans either.

Strength is important, but the tire flip is all about technique! Driving up with legs and glutes will help save your back and upper body. It is not done like a deadlift. If you do it wrong you will tear your back or your biceps. The guys that are really good at this push so hard their feet leave the ground. At the top, while the tire still has momentum, you shift your hands to more of a bench press postition and push it over. It is exhausting!! I cant recall the tire size, but they are over 4 ft tall and about 18-20 inches wide. Weight can range from 200-800 lbs, so find out what they are gonna use.
Lots of deadlift reps with light weight (135) will help. But again, really strict form!!! Kettlebell swings also help.

May I suggest a tire from a Mazda. They should not weigh that much. (the car most likely will be in the body shop in NJ). laugh

They moved all but one of the Zumba classes to 9:00 a.m. which is irritating beyond measure (I think 3 of them will be calendared as "PT") and the rest sounds like it should be shorter, multiple sets on the weight machines. and add that to the elliptical and bike. How much muscle can I build in 60 days? I'm a true ectomorph, so building muscle is hard.

In terms of sheer mass..not much. But in terms of strength...you bet!! You are well motivated and your legs are used to taking a lot stress from all the dancing! Tooltime isnt going to like anything with a lot of sheering force, so I'm going to say a lot of leg presses at medium weight and a lot of kettlebell swings (with very strict form).
When I say a lot, I mean to try for one set of 70 with about 15 pounds.
Strict form, bend your knees at the bottom and use your legs and shoulders to bring the weight up. Let gravity bring the weight down, but maintain control. Dont just let it fall or it will jerk at the bottom (bad). Lots of good examples on youtube.
No kettlebell? No problem, use a 15 pound dumbbell or 15 pouind plate. smile

Don't want to add any real muscle mass, just as much strength as possible. The hubs likes my legs a LOT just the way they are. He married a 110 lb ballerina...

Tooltime doesn't want me doing squats or lunges. What about the knee press at 150 lbs (feet parallet and turned out)with a lot of reps and the abductor/adductor machine at whatever I can do? Not sure about hamstring curls with weights torquing Kneepolean, but I get plenty of those dancing. Hammies have always been really solid. Tooltime has me well-braced for dance and won't let me wear athletic shoes for anything that involves pivoting on the balls of my feet because of the potential sheering and torque. That leaves me in athletic shoes for the elliptical, the bike, the treadmill (I really feel the need to try some light running smirk), and for the weight machines.

You might ask Mark about a spinning class.
Yes on the leg presses!150 is probably about right. Sets of 10-12, work up to 10 sets.

I'm tired already. I doubt they're going to be the 800 lb ones, but they're not really giving many specifics on the website. All it says is a "large tire". I would think it would make a big difference to people contemplating signing up, like me...oh well. Maybe I'll just sign up for the regular 5k instead grin

Matt, I'd be willing to bet that if you watch some Matt Hughes or other UFC fighter's training footage, you'll see just about exactly the tires you'll be using. Again...sounds fun. Enjoy. smile

I emailed on it. It's put on by the UofI VA hospital, so it's really more of a fun/fundraiser event I know, so I'd be surprised if it's anything extremely challenging or they'd limit their participation.

Also means I'll be up against college athletes...but I guess I'm not competing in anything to win, so that's ok!

MattB, have you tried netrition.com? I saved a fortune getting our protein shakes, energy gels, and protein bars alone, but even better - shipping is almost always next day, and you get free goodies if you spend enough at one time, (hubby and I share orders with a friend, so we almost always do!)

I haven't, no. All the stuff I've been using is a brand that is only available in the store I go to, and he's good about giving discounts when buying multiple things, so it's been cheaper than options elsewhere in town. Plus, I can sample anything before I buy it so I know what I'm getting, so that's always helpful.

I'd be open to suggestions on types that anyone's tried and liked though and would give them a chance for sure.

Quick suggestions for a protein supplement. I work out lightly and want to lose weight in addition to toning and adding a little muscle. Goal is a stronger core and a sixpack (or at least identifiable abs) by Summer.

Ideas?

Do not use the Peepers diet.

Mine does not give a six pak but will give you a keg.

The common wisdom I've always heard is that six-packs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. So you should probably drink more!

I know mine is in there, hopefully some day I can prove it to everyone else. I'll leave the suggestions to the smarter folks here, I took suggestions from the sales dude when I figured out he actually knew what he was talking about and didn't just point me to the priciest stuff.

what are you talking about, mine consists of bacon (about three pounds per week, on a slow week), other breakfast sausages, eggs, tuna, chicken, pizza burgers, cheddar cheese infused hamburger patties, No Name Steaks, etc.

sure, there is the occasional Thin Mint I have. By the way, one sleeve of Thin Mints is considered one serving, right?

B^3, I got a message back from the race coordinator and was actually a little disappointed by the results.

The tire is merely a 120 pound bus tire, and the cement blocks are 35 pounds or so. For the blocks, there's a big pile and you do a relay where each person grabs one, runs down, drops it off and comes back then the next goes, and you keep it up until the pile's gone.

So, I'm going to survive it without too much additional strain I'm betting! Should be easier than my typical Saturday morning 10 miles actually!

I agree! It will be a different kind of physical stress, but with all the running you do, your recovery between legs will be really fast. As for the tire, still concentrate on using your legs and glutes for the flip, not your arms. You would likely be fine, but a tear in a biceps would really suck.
It sounds like fun!

A torn bicep beats a torn glute any day of the week! But I'm not at all worried about that. I'm more worried when I flip it, it's going to take off and fly 10-15 feet!

I'm the least muscular of the 4 in my group, and also the oldest (sometimes I'm the oldest person in a group, believe it or not!), so I think our team is going to massacre this thing. My only concern is that I'm going to have to run down to the lowest level of our four and I'll get a horrible 5k time, but oh well smile
