I clicked the link, cringing at what I might find... and found that it was blocked by IT due to "weapons". Which you would think I should have known before I clicked since... I'm the one who set up the firewall restrictions for the bank. Now I gotta explain my transgression to IT (me), and I'm feeling cranky and might get annoyed with myself, so I'm procrastinating having the meeting. Also, there are too many people in the lobby to witness me talking to myself.

Lessons learned on vacation last week:
1. Running on the beach is not nearly as fun as it sounds.
2. Taking a two month old to the beach isn't as bad as it sounds.
3. Having family there to help with said two month old is priceless.
4. It feels great to already have a few miles in before said family wakes up in the morning.
5. It is possible to lose weight while on vacation. (1.7lbs for the week!!)
6. Watching a sunset on the beach with a happy baby and wife is an extremely special experience.

I took some time off from TRX (2 months) and just went back for the first time today. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning!

She's probably still sleeping, lazy west coast people and all.
I'm researching what makes a foot fall asleep during running. Anyone with personal experience?
So far potential issues include shoes (laced too tight, arch issues, too narrow), a variety of bone alignment issues and something about clenching your piriformis muscles too much (muscles in your rear area) and it clamps down on the nerves that run down to the feet.
It's just the left foot and happens right around 3 miles. Very irritating, I can only do it for about a half mile or so before I have to stop and walk or stretch a bit until it goes away.

My experience is with the shoes laced too tight and my feet swelling in the heat. It only happens in the summer. It's also when I'm not doing the best job paying attention to hydration.

Jen is right on overly tight laces. I have to completely unlace every new pair of shoes and re lace them to get them where I want them. But I would also think about seeing a chiropractor (a sports med practitioner is best) or even a massage therapist. Also, you need to change the direction and side of the road you run on. Roads have a crown causing to run with one foot lower than the other, changing direction, sides of the road and even routes will help to alleviate the imbalance.

Happens in all kinds of weather, indoors and outdoors, and only on one foot. I've tried having the laces as loose as possible, didn't make a difference. If it's just an arch support type issue and I'm putting too much pressure on the nerves on the bottom of my foot, that should be a relatively easy fix. I can only assume it's a biological issue though, since it only happens to one foot and all external factors are applied equally to both feet.

That would make total sense if it wasn't for the fact that it happens on a treadmill also. I definitely notice the additional strain on my left ankle when I'm on a circular trail and always turning left, but that doesn't appear to be related. I'll check in with my chiro and see if he's got any thoughts on it. I'm going to try a new lacing method I think, not sure if it will make any difference, but might help with overall comfort. I need to get out and buy new shoes to start rotating in too, so when I'm there I can talk inserts and see what they think on it too. Got the card of a new place with a snazzy looking stride analysis set-up, so I'm wanting to visit there at some point anyway.

Money is on misaliagnment (back to the chiro or massage therapist). But you might also look at how flat your arches are and if you run flat footed (orthotics). With your speed, I'm going to bet that you aren't too flat footed. Its hard to generate speed with out a good toe push.

I would recommend AGAINST inserts of any kind based solely on the recommendation of a running store (or chiro for that matter). If it's problematic, go to a sports med doctor/therapist. The numb foot is a symptom, treating the symptom wont solve the root cause. You need a good sports med doctor/therapist to get to the root cause of the numbness.
Think 'check engine light' in your car...you dont just unplug the fuse to make the light go away or cover the light with duct tape. You have to find the cause to really fix it.

Yeah, I've browsed online a lot, particularly Runners World. I got an idea to try a few months back, to work in running on my toes for 30 seconds or so every 5 minutes. It helps rest certain areas and stretch out the calves and arches. It sort of helped, but my impact ended up knocking my hip out of alignment and it took several weeks and visits to the chiro to get that sorted out, so I'm not too interested in pursuing that option again!
As I'm ramping up my distances, I'm just trying to work out my problems so I can continue to progress comfortably and prevent any injurires that would be big set-backs.

I'll shop around and see if I can at least find a good looking one! I know of a few places with good reputations that I can probably trust to give sound medical advice without a sales motive.

So the more you use your feet, the bigger they get? hmmmm.....
Other things that can affect this. Stretching - not only enough, but proper. Strength training and balance - If you allow one set of muscles to become disproprotionately stronger than their antagonistic pair, you can have such issues. (hamstrings vs quads, abs vs lower back, etc)
