At my very best (which was probably in my 30's) I never could break out of the 18's. Sub 14:00 is just insane....but fun to watch! smile

I am currently trying to find a 24:something time....but it eludes me. laugh

You break it on the treadmill, don't you?? So I know you can!

What I've read is that for most runners, (consistent runners that have been running for years) 27 is the peak time to set your life PR's. Now if I'd been running for the last 10 years I'm sure that would be the case, but oh well. I'm sure my records are all behind me, so I only compare to what I've done since I started back up 1.5 or so years ago.

I'm not looking forward to winter. I have yet to figure out what I'm going to do, it depends a lot on what kind of winter it is. Last year was tame enough that I could get out and hit the trails still, but now that I've been outside all summer, I have no desire to be back on a treadmill. I could go a lot further, but it really holds me back on speed so I don't really feel I gain much from it.

We need to find a race to run together. I know you can do it!

I want to get a 23:??. PR is a 24:19 and I've ran a 24:50 so far this year. It's possible, but will take some work.

I seriously do not envy you guys up north! I can run outside most of the winter and only have to resort to the dreadmill on occaision. I think we are about as far north as you can get away with it. Jen has to spend a lot of time on the 'mill too. You all get so much snow that stays around, its just dangerous. We get usually gat one decent snow and that's about it. Wind chill is the limiting factor here.

there is a guy here that I frequnetly see at the races (I'd call him a race buddy. We know each other but only from races). He is 49 and usually runs a 20:something. So it is possible to be nearly ancient and still have some speed. smile

I have run a 30:00 5k on the treadmill, but not outside yet. It's so easy to pace when the treadmill is doing it for you. Also I get in a good zone with my music and breathing because there are no distractions and the temperature is constant. All that changes when I run outside, which is what I need to work on.

To risk serious injury for the sake of a single run is not bright.
I will still run in the rain and sometimes I really enjoy that. But I dont run on questionable surfaces or when I cannot reasonable expect to be seen at all.
Also, for those that have never had frostbite, its a mean biotch.

Last winter I ran through some occasional drifts that were up to my knees...maybe I shouldn't continue that practice wink

BBB, I always see old guys finishing ahead of me, I'm okay with that. There are some awful fit dudes in their 60's that can run a mean 5k, very respectable! They're usually the ones in short shorts and no shirts too, if the route goes past a nursing home, all the old ladies are at the windows staring I'm sure! laugh

I like the cooler weather for keeping me from getting too hot, but it's a fine line between cold enough and too cold when it starts burning your lungs and your eyelids freeze shut from the sweat when you blink. I'll go outside down to 15 degrees or so, below that and I don't own anything that will keep me warm for an hour and still let me run.

Ok, none of you warned me I'd get hooked on running 5Ks. Our calendar is so full the next several weeks that I don't know when I'll get signed up for another one. My wife called earlier to say she and her friends were going to Branson on November 17, and the first thing I did was look for a 5K. I need something on the calendar to keep me motivated.

Haha! I totally understand. I need a goal and something to work towards to have the bit of extra motivation that's sometimes necessary to get my butt out of bed in the morning.

I have one in October booked, and a few others I'm thinking about...not sure what else after that. There's an early half in April next year, not sure if I can fully train for that over the winter or not though.

It's a lot better to be addicted to than sitting in your recliner eating cheesy poofs! laugh

Check out the upcoming section. There is a race in Clever, MO which is about 45 miles from Branson. smile

I'm not going to Branson. My wife is. I went once and that was enough. I said someday God will punish mankind for putting such a dreadful town in such a beautiful place.

I found a 5k supporting special olympics not too far away.

But that's a nice link, RR Jen. I like their motto:
"Train for the health of it...
Race for the fun of it!"

LOL...if you know the back roads Branson isnt too bad. I pity the poor people who stay on the strip! I do live in such a beautiful part of the country and avoid Branson the majority of the time.

The local running organization is fantastic, there are so many races that I have to limit myself. There are 5 that I want to run from this weekend and the first of November. That probably wouldnt be smart with 20 mile long runs sandwiched in. So I'll just stick with 3. grin

I just don't know what kind of mileage I'll be able to do over the winter and such. I've already experienced moving from treadmill to outside...so I'm not really comfortable saying that just because I might be able to do 15 inside (there should be a medal just for enduring that!) doesn't mean I can do 13.1 outside. Pacing is so incredibly different! I'm willing to try it though. I'm doing 3 days a week 5-6 miles around a 9:00 pace, 1 day of 5 half mile intervals, two days of core/weights. I can get to 13, but it didn't progress as I needed to in order to do the one I was looking at that's about 3 weeks away now frown

If you're doing 6 on a weekly basis, I can get you to a comfortable half in 6 weeks. Rock star pace in 10. smile I would make a fantastic coach.

You could do the one in 3 weeks...at your training run pace. Adrenaline would get you through it, but it would hurt like a...well...it would hurt.

Lucky for me, I feel no pain! I'm young and stupid, I'll kill my body for one race because the future is irrelevant and decisions don't have consequences! (sarcasm wink )

So, in about 28 weeks, can I expect to run it in... 1:20 or so?? You're hired!

The mileage is building steadily, and I've moved from laps on trails to sidewalks around town so I'm not having to run 8 laps to hit 5 miles and it doesn't feel as long. What I need to work on is my maintenance in between runs. I still suck about stretching, I could use some more work on nutrition, etc. Though between tart cherry juice and some awesome fish oil supplements, I have taken care of pretty much all joint pain and haven't had any ibuprofen in months. Glad about that.
