has anyone ever seen "0" used in this field for the micro data reports? For example, maybe was used in prior years, before 2010? Trying to understand why my predessor used zero in some cases

No. Even in 2000 the codes were 1, 2, 3 and 4; 4 is for consumer loans.

Whenever I've seen 0, it is a data entry error, where the default is 0, and somebody didn't bother to enter a value! smile
