OK, the son's 2001 Jimmy would not start this morning. It turns over, fires, sputters then dies. I turned the key and listened for the pump to run, and it does, so i don't think it is the fuel pump.
i don't have a pressure gauge to see if there is enough fuel pressure, but thought I would pick up a filter on the way home.
Anyother ideas? Other than never buy another GM POS.

Fuel filter first
Bad gas?
Vacuum leak?
Pressure regulator leaking? (internal)
Pressure test fuel pump

Should mention, 2 weeks ago had to replace the intake manifold gasket as it was leaking antifreeze. So the garage had it down to the block. I now it took them a little longer getting it back together cause they couldn't get the timing right and something with the destributor.
But it is possible they cut a vacuum line.

since they were playing with the dist. I would check the vacuum line at it first. also when they removed the manifold they would have disconnected the vacuum line at the pressure regular which may be hard plastic so determining if there is a leak may be an issue to test it I would just replace it with some regular vac, hose if no better at least you can rule it out.

I suspect your son is sabotaging the old junker to force you to buy him a decent vehicle.

Perhaps it is something as simple as the fuel filter being all gunked up?

I had an older Ford that would foul plugs from time to time and the result was just as you described. The car was over 12 years old so I never spent the money to find out why the plugs where fouling though.

There used to be a time that whenever any major work was done (Intake manifold work) on a car the fuel filter was changed by the garage as part of the job.

There used to be a time that whenever any major work was done (Intake manifold work) on a car... the mechanic(s) took pride in doing the job well, not just doing the job well enough to get you out of the way.

Timing is still off, take it back to the mechanic or buy him a late 1990's Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 liter inline 6 engine that has been well maintained (98 and later have driver and passenger airbags).

Yeah, I have it back in the garage. Won't start. Turns over, fires, sputters and dies. After a gazillion tries it started.

My husband owns his own auto repair business. I have had many women customers tell me that they really appreciate the fact that he is so honest. And if something goes wrong again, they just bring it back to see what the issue is. Word of mouth is the best advertising in small towns. It can kill your business or make it thrive. We are in Michigan DDregs if you're close.
