They are just trying to legitimize their "sport". They want to fit in with MLB, NFL and NBA

how is this any different than the NFL telling Arizona unless they recognize certain federal holidays that they will not get a superbowl?

of course, unlike the other leagues mentioned, this level of corruption has not made its way to the game at the international level.

As both sides use the same ball there is no completive advantage in messing with it.

International sports organizations like FIFA and the International Olympic Committee have no outside watchdogs to police the members. Billions of dollars are at stake, but unless an individual country follows the bread crumbs of corruption and holds the crooks accountable, these sports executives can do pretty much whatever they want. Until that changes, expect more and bigger scandals of this kind in the future.

the take on this in the soccer community is that the United States Men's program is so far behind the rest of the international world, they did this to try and disqualify many teams so they could actually win a quarter-final round in the WC (obviously tongue in cheek)

They could have just added some drama classes for the US teammates or possibly some stuntmen for additional flopping.

soccer is the most corrupt game on Earth. Any sport where not beating your opponent but instead pining to subjective officiating results in a win, is a joke.

now, let's talk about officiating in other big sports...

baseball - different strike zones per umpire, and often per player
basketball - what is a foul on Lebron is not a foul on an "unknown". and traveling? ha!
football - conference after nearly every flag and at least 25% waved off

baseball: the strike zone is based on the height and shape of the hitter so it has to change. But even this it seems to change per umpire

basketball: stopped caring years ago, tried to get into it the last couple years and no go

football: So true, yet call me crazy, but this is the best game on earth to play or watch!!

Wasn't there a crucial football game years ago where a team got a mysterious 5th down?

I watched that game, that was strange that no one caught onto that, challenged it or anything

Colorado beat Missouri on a 5th down touchdown to end the game in 1990. Colorado went on to be co-national champions that year with Georgia Tech. (wow, there's a statement you don't hear much - Georgia Tech and Colorado national champions in football).

If Missouri had won, Georgia Tech would have probably been unanimous national champs.
