Wow. Dr. Zhivago was a big deal in its day. My parents took me to see it when it came out. I was maybe 10-12. Was the dullest, dreariest movie for a kid. Went from bad to worse all the way through. Only time I ever saw it. I've always intended to watch it again. Was taking accordion lessons at the time and given sheet music to "Somewhere My Love" transcribed for the accordion. Can't imagine parents subjecting themselves to some kid squawking out the tune from his bedroom.

I remember seeing it on television when I was a kid. Knowing nothing about the Russian Revolution at that time, I was pretty confused, but I liked seeing the Cossacks charge on horseback. The romantic stuff I could have done without.

I watched it again just a couple years ago. It's much better if you know what's going on.

And when I was a kid I played Lara's Theme on the piano, and had it memorized.

I'm sure it sounded better on the piano.

I wonder if a guy named Omar Sharif would be as popular in these where you see a lot of anti-Muslim, anti-Middle East sentiment. Our society used to be fascinated with Islamic culture. Look at the Shriners with their styles of dress and the architecture of some old Shriner halls.

I will always remember him as Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia. The scene where he and Lawrence meet for the first time is one of my favorite film scenes.

Well, after 9-11, who would have thought we'd have a president with the middle name Hussein? Honestly, I don't think we're as anti-Middle East as you think.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
Hidalgo baby...his greatest role ever...

although I did love Lawrence of Arabia...

and if you really want to read a tragic story, read T.E. Lawrence's biography...what a poor, conflicted soul

I forgot about Hidalgo. He was good in that. It reminded me of Oliver Reed in Gladiator. Same kind of great role for an aging great actor. smile

There was someone besides Viggo Mortensen in Hidalgo? I didn't notice.

^^^ Right!?!?! I wish Viggo would make more movies.

Hidalgo is one of the movies I could watch over and over and over. Anytime it's on, I'll watch it. I've probably seen it 50 times. I've also cried at the end 50 times.
