I was a commercial lender during the run-up to Y2K. As early as 1998, we were telling loan customers to give us a Y2K plan by year-end or move your business. That was really ugly. I had a good customer sell his business rather than deal with Y2K issues.

We had an OCC examiner who was going to lock himself in a bunker somewhere because he was convinced that Y2K would be the Apocalypse. No joke, he was very much convinced that no level of planning or preparation was going to save the world from melting down. Try getting THAT guy to buy into your Y2K plan.

Y2K..I got paid double time on New Years Day to "make sure everything in the branch was ok" We actually had a list of things on the system we had to check. Great pay day though!

We were told to not make any plans for NYE of Y2K as it was a once in a lifetime event. My comeback to the EVP was since it was a once in a lifetime event shouldn't we spend it with friends and family? I got no reply (other than an extremely bad "look")a few days later we got pagers for that week.

I remember going to the gym a couple days before New Year's 1999 and an old friend from High School was there and he was telling me he had about $5K (or $5M if you prefer) on him because he felt the apocalypse was coming. I just laughed. If the end of the world is coming, a few G's ain't gonna do much for you.

I spent New Years eve 1999-2000 at the bank with about a dozen co-workers. There was food, beer, and champagne. We watched the ball drop on a tiny black and white TV with very bad reception. At midnight, we ran our check list (some joker turned the lights off in the network room while we were in there, nearly resulting in a heart attack or two) then waited for the branches to fax us their completed check lists. The most memorable thing from that evening was the smoked turkey, it was delicious.

Today I celebrate 10 years with the bank. As an anniversary gift to myself, I think I will leave early!

They have some wonderful courses if you're interested. You have to pay if you want a certificate that may or may not provide college credit. Take without the certificate and its free.

Yes just like when I get the fried chicken salad with lots of honey mustard. Still a salad if salad is in the title.

I had a room-mate back in the day who used to ask the Subway Sandwich Artist for salad on his sandwich. I tried to correct him and say "that's called lettuce". Nope, that's salad.

So, Aramco is pulling 3.65 billion barrels of oil out of the ground each year, and they have reserves of 270 billion barrels. That is 74 years of oil production before they run out. They need to buy Apple or something soon.

So, we mostly owe ourselves. Well, this should work out swimmingly:
