There's a possibility that we may be moving to Portland, Oregon. I've never been to the Pacific NW. Are there any BOLers familiar with the area and who can provide some information, resources, etc. about living there? Thanks so much!

Pulling people out of the ditc...
the best thing about Portland is you can wear whatever you want, when you want, whether it matches or not...oh, and you'll save a ton of money on personal hygiene products as you no longer need to bathe...you will need to sell your car and buy a bike, too.

If you like Pinot Noir, you're going to the right place.

If you've ever watched the series, Grimm, that's where it takes place.

Never been to Portland, but from what I've seen on TV it looks gorgeous.

Unless you're moving from Austin, it will be quite a culture shock. I've visited Portland and it really is as hippy as it looks on TV. But it is a pretty place and there are lots of unique things to do and see there.

I was thinking the same thing, Okie!! Not just the people, but the weather too.

I was in Portland for a conference a few years ago. Beautiful city - very walkable.

Grew up in Beaverton OR right outside Portland. BUT that was 33yrs ago. Family still lives there. Where exactly are you moving to? Lots of walkers, riders and a wonderful bus and light rail system. You can go anywhere at any time on the bus or lightrail. I had no use for a car until after I was 18. Bus pass and I could go anywhere including to/from work. We did not live right in Portland per se, there are a lot of nice burbs around there. mostly to the south and west of Portland. A lot of people also live in Vancouver and commute depending on where in Portland they work. Does rain a lot, never really noticed it growing up. Rain does not stop anyone from doing anything there. East of Portland is less rainy. I get claustrophobia now back there because you can't see all of the sky like Colorado and there is thousands of bugs. Everything and I mean everything grows there, very pretty. Pets get fleas.

Peach, you had me confused until I looked at the map and saw there was a Vancouver, OR. I was thinking it's a long commute from Canada.

Voodoo Donuts, all your clothing will be GoreTex (get used to rain), nice mountains to hike/climb, no sales tax, can't pump your own gas or you'll get berated by the crabby gas station attendant (I'm still scarred from the incident), Cannon Beach/Seaside are wonderful places, Astoria if you want to relive Goonies, lots of bridges in Portland.

Do they still have the Sunday Market downtown? I don't think you can turn left without a green light. Cannon Beach is awesome, Haystack rock. I remember when you just drove on down to the beach. I guess now there is restrictions and power lines. Go to Bagbee hot springs, oh maybe not, it's overrun with hippys again according to my sister. Time repeats itself has it was overrun and burnt down by hippies in the 70's too. Still a great place. Clackamas river anywhere on it. Lot's of places to Camp. Government Camp is a good one. License plates are cheap!
