Is it a violation of Reg P to post account numbers on the face of a check to payoff a loan? Example: Our Financial Institution is paying off a credit card bill (as part of the loan proceeds) to Certergy or to JC Penney and we reference the individual's specific account number on the face of our cashier's check.

My thought would be that it is within the exception to conduct business on behalf of your customer. Also as a former lender, I always listed the account number on the check for any payoff. It made good sense to me to ensure that would assist with the posting at the other company on behalf of my customer.

Opinions are mine not my employer.

I'm with Maria on this one. That is an exception to conduct business and ensure proper crediting of the payment.

If you have a copy of the "Frequently Asked Questions for the Privacy Regulation" that was issued by the regulators, look at question I.3. That gives the rationale for allowing the writing of account numbers on checks generally and you should determine whether it fits your situation with cashier's checks.
