Within other financial institutions, who do you have assigning NAICS codes to businesses in your core or other systems? Is it a frontline employee at the time a business account is opened? Or is it a backoffice employee who reviews the account after it is opened?

It really depends on the detail of your CCD information that you gather and document at account opening. A centralized approach might increase consistency, but if you aren't gathering and documenting detailed information regarding the nature of the business, the backroom is going to be pretty clueless.

Here it's the compliance department after we receive the business profile. We've trained retail to be really specific when listing "type of business" and while a little painful at first, it's gotten much better and they know the type of detail we need to assign an appropriate code.

Ask your questions and draw your conclusions while the customer's representative is still sitting there. The passage of time does nothing to enhance a customer's willingness to provide information which it may regard as mundane.
